Introduction to WebFX
A network is a system of interconnected
computers
 The computers can be connected via a
wide range of communications systems,
including phone lines, satellite links,
radio waves, etc
 Computers in a network can send
messages to each other (e.g. e-mail),
send files to each other, run programs
and send output to each other

Server and Client
A computer which provides services to
another (such as a data or program file)
is referred to as a server.
 It uses special software to provide
services to one or more other
computers on the network, which are
often referred to as clients, or the users
desktop computers.

Types of Networks

LAN (Local Area Network)
–

A LAN is generally limited to a specific
area, such as a building, or a campus. The
computers on a LAN are able to share data
with each other, but not with computers
outside the LAN
WAN (Wide Area Network)
–
A WAN is a network system which can
extend over a wide geographic area, and is
not limited to a specific physical area
LAN

Server
– computers dedicated to the task of providing
file sharing and other services to computers
on the LAN. These special computers are
called file servers, and they are often highend computers which can deal with requests
from a number of computers simultaneously
– Novell Netware and Windows NT Server are
examples of a server-based networking
system. WebFX is a Windows NT 4.0 Serverbased system.
WAN
Use a variety of technologies to provide
linkages between widely separated computers
 The most common, and largest WAN is the
Internet, which uses an underlying
technology called TCP/IP (Transmission
Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) to link
systems together.

Introduction to WebFX

WebFX (Windows NT 4.0 Network):
WebFX is a general name for the
computing initiative at St.F.X., and is
sometimes used to refer to the campus
networking system.
What is on WebFX
Caesar is the applications server;
 Iago is the Internet server, and provides
Web, Mail, Newsgroup, Calendar and
Directory servers;
 Julius is the student file server;
 MacBeth is the printer server.

WebFX for Students
All students on campus must login to
WebFX to use any computer resources
on campus.
 When logged in to WebFX, users can
access any software applications
(Windows and DOS) for which you have
valid permissions.
 Home Directory - H:
 Web Directory - W:

Using WebFX

To access WebFX, you need
– WebFX account - This username (e.g. x2001xyz)
provides you with access to WebFX domain;
Login & Logout

To login:
– CTRL + ALT + DEL --->
– enter username (x2001abc) --->
– TAB ---> enter password --->
– make sure bottom says WebFX---> ENTER

To Logout
– ® Start®/Shutdown
– login as different user (Never leave your
computer without logging out first)
Change Password
Change network account password to
an easy to remember combination of
numbers and letters (at least 6) letter:
 Ctrl + ALT + DEL at NT screen ;

Printers on Campus
A number of network printers are
available on campus.
 Lab printers (laser printers) have a cost
associated with their use.

– Users are given a preliminary account
containing $12.50,
– printing costs $0.05 per page,
– billing occurs at the end of the month (be
careful and there is interest).
Printing under WebFX


Printers on campus for students include dot
matrix printers (printing is free) and laser
printers (printing has a cost).
Make sure you select the proper printer
before you click the print button
– The most common mistake people make is to click
the Quick-Print button (e.g. in Word ) before
selecting the printer from the File-Print menu
option.
Printing under WebFX



Try not to waste paper. Use the Print Preview
function when available to make sure that
your document will print the way you want
before you print it.
Make sure you select a default printer,
otherwise you won’t be able to print.
To see Printer Queue: Start/Settings/Printers
- right click on printer and open it- you can
only delete your own jobs
Backing Up Your Data




Save important files in your H: directory to
backup your data. This network drive is
backed up on a daily basis (10 MB limit)
You should still maintain your own local
backups since it is costly to restore data from
backup tapes
Don’t save to the C: drive!
Use W: for web documents only!
Backing Up Your Data

Back up using floppy diskettes:
– label the floppy as a backup
– check the floppy regularly for bad sectors with the
NT Error-Checking Tool (right click the A: drive
icon in Explorer, choose Properties-Tools-Error
Checking)
– check the floppy regularly for viruses (use Norton
program)
– use the write-protect tab when the floppy is not in
use .
