• HYPERTEXT TRANSPORT PROTOCOL
(HTTP): communications standard used to
transfer Web pages, defines how msgs are
formatted and transmited.
• HYPERTEXT MARKUP LANGUAGE
(HTML): programming language for
creating Web sites – browsers interpret
Hypertext: non-linear writing in which you follow
associative paths through a world of textual documents
(www uses hyperlinks)

SEARCHING THE WEB FOR INFORMATION
• SEARCH ENGINE: tool for locating
specific sites or information on
WWW
Web sites are not automatically “found” by search
engines… you must “submit” your site to the
search engine. Your site will then be added to the
search engine “index” as described on the next
slide.

Search Engines
Contains three major parts
1. Spider, crawler, or bot – searches the
Web site (once it is submitted)
2. Index – catalogs what is found
3. Search engine utility – provides
search results
Note: Steps 1 & 2 occur when you “submit” your site to the search engine
And step 3 occurs when some one searches for words using the search engine.
