I. Origins of Rome

A. Romulus and Remus
Twin sons of the God of Mars
 Built near the location where they were found
B. Mortals
 Build there because of the strategic location and fertile soil
C. Geography
 7 rolling hills, near the Tiber River
 Center of Italy- middle of the Med. Sea



II. The First Romans

The Latins, Greeks and Etruscans
 The Latins were the first Romans
 The Greeks brought Rome into trade and closer
contact with Greek Civilization
 Etruscans-native to the area
 Influenced by the use of their alphabet,
architecture and writing
III. The Early Republic:
Is a form of gov’t in which power rests in the hands
of their citizens and electing their leaders
 A. Patricians and Plebeians-struggle for pwr



B. Twelve Tables



Pat.- wealthy land owners (held most of the pwr)
Pleb.-commoners
A written law code that helped the Plebians
All free citizens had a right to the protection of the law
C. Government Under the Republic

Consuls- Two King like figures


Limited power
Senate- Legislative and administrative functions

Could Elect a Dictator in a state of Crisis- only a 6 month reign
Early Republic Continued

D. The Roman Army


Great Value on their Army
Legions- citizens who owned land and citizens
who wished to serve in public office (10 yrs) were
placed into these large organized military units

Infantry- 5,000 foot soldiers
Calvary- soldiers on horseback

Rome’s Army was KEY to Rome’s greatness

