‘God’s Purpose for Israel’ #1
Romans chapter 9
Chapters 9 to 11 - an aside or the climax
“Israel” used 15-20 times only here
37 Old Testament quotations
The longest letter in the New Testament
Why did Paul write to the Romans?
He had a need to write to the Roman Christians
OR
There was some major issue in the Roman church
Paul wrote letters between 52 and 64/67 AD
Wrote to the Romans about 57 or 58 AD
The Roman Church:
 Perhaps began with Pentecost converts
 Grew into a mixed race church
 49AD Claudius banished all Jews from Rome
and church became Gentile
 12 years later when the Jews invited back,
the church didnt welcome them
Perhaps the beginning of anti-semitism
and replacement theology:
that the church has replaced Israel.
A desperately, divisive issue that could create
two churches, & spread throughout the Empire.
So Paul writes a long letter to an unknown church
to rebuke the Gentiles & persuade them

a Jewish God, yet spurn the Jews.
