THE CAROLINGIAN EMPIRE
(Unit 4.3)
The Carolingian Empire
• After the fall of the Roman
Empire, the Frankish Kingdom
was established in France.
• But the kings were weak and
they handed power to the palace
butlers (=mayordomos de
palacio).
• Charles Martel, who defeated
the Muslims in Poitiers (France),
was one of the most importants
butlers.
The Carolingian Dinasty
• The son of Charles Martel,
Pippin the short, of the
Carolingian Dinasty, became
king.
• The son of Pippin the short
was Charlemagne
(Carlomagno), who wanted
to restore the Western
Roman Empire.
The Carolingian Dinasty
• Charlemagne conquered vast territories…
Because of this he was crowned by the Pope
as the new Emperor of the West in the year 800.
Life in the Carolingian Empire
ECONOMY and SOCIETY
• The main economic activities were agriculture and
stockbreeding (=ganadería).
• In the country, landlords dominated over lands and peasants
(=campesinos)
• The trade was very slow because communication networks had
deteriorated
CULTURE
• Charlemagne created schools in
cathedrals and monasteries. The
most important school was the
Academy of Aquisgrane.
• The monks copied books by hand
- Charlemagne died in 814, leaving the Empire to his
son Louis the Pious (Luis el Piadoso)
- Louis the Pious, with the treaty of Verdun (843)
divided the Empire among his three sons:
Charles, Lothair, and Louis
This was the end of the
Carolingian Empire.
