What is Global Brigades?
The world’s largest student-led international development organization. We empower university students and young
professionals world-wide to provide communities in developing countries with sustainable solutions that improve quality
of life while respecting local culture and improving the environment.
Global Medical Brigades provides a holistic model for sustainable health care in under-served rural communities by
conducting preliminary needs assessments, treating patients to the highest ethical standards, sponsoring referrals to
those with needs beyond our capability, recording data for the production of quantitative reports, and working with
other GB programs to improve the water, sanitation, and economic infrastructures.
Each year, more than 4,000 student volunteers and health professionals travel to Central America to establish mobile
medical clinics in under-resourced communities. Each community with whom we partner receives a brigade every 3 to 4
months in which hundreds of patients are treated and volunteers deliver public health workshops. Between brigades,
our in-country teams maintain relationships with the communities to provide follow-up. In Honduras, our Community
Health Worker program empowers local leaders to perpetuate a consistent level of health care.
Here at Tulane University, we are working to form a dedicated group of volunteers to improve the quality of life abroad
as well as here at home in New Orleans. Currently, Tulane’s recently founded Global Brigades Chapter has an
Architecture Brigade, a Medical Brigade, and a Dental Brigade. This spring break, March 10th-16th, 2012, all three
brigades will travel to Honduras together. The dental and medical brigades will work side-by-side, bringing at least 5
physicians, a dentist, and 40+ students to set-up a mobile clinic where we will intake, triage, consult, treat, educate, and
dispense medications to over 800 people.

MEDICAL
MISSION
We work with licensed medical professionals and community
health workers to provide comprehensive health services in
rural communities with limited access to health care. Our
current focus is in Honduras, Ghana, and Panama.
What is YOUR impact?
•For every 1 volunteer, 24 patients are given
access to essential medical care.
•For every 1 volunteer, nearly 2 pap smears or
prostate exams are given.
•For every $63 raised, one patient gains access
to a doctor and essential medications.
MEDICAL
THE BRIGADE
•
Take patient vitals, obtain patient history, shadow and
assist licensed physicians , participate in preventative
education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed
pharmacist.
•
Become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their
community and learn about how to prevent and treat
those illnesses.
•
Make a tangible impact in a specific community while
gaining real life experience in the field of international
medicine.
COMMUNITY VISIT
Volunteers record patient’s name, age,
gender, community residence and date
of visit into data informatics system.

Individual Fundraising
-By far the most effective way to raise money is by writing letters
that explain your trip and ask for donations
- Let’s look at the template and an actual sample letter…
Be sure to explain what this trip will mean to you personally and
why exactly it is that you want to be part of a Brigade.
-It is also helpful to include any pictures you or your friends may
have taken on previous Brigades.

Letter Writing
-You may find that asking for a specific amount of money is the most successful
approach.
- Let them know the total amount that you are hoping to raise.
You may even want to outline the specific cost, perhaps daily expenses, of your
program. Photo
Here
-Family members and friends can chose to donate to an individual students’ fundraising accounts personally, while groups have people donate to a general fund which
is then eventually distributed between all group members.
- Making these letters as personal as possible will yield better outcomes. Also in the
letter, be sure to direct potential donors to your empowered page (provide link) so
Photo
that they can make a direct donation.
