Healthcare Providers
• The healthcare system includes
• all available medical services
• the ways in which individuals pay for medical care
• programs aimed at preventing disease
and disability
• Within the healthcare system, doctors work with
nurses and other healthcare providers to care for
patients.

Section 24.1 The Healthcare System
Doctors
• Primary care physicians take care of most people’s
routine medical needs.
• Once licensed, a doctor can
• diagnose medical conditions
• provide treatment
• write prescriptions for medication
• A diagnosis (dy ug NOH sis) is a doctor’s opinion of
the nature or cause of a medical condition.

Medical Specialists
• If you have a condition that requires specialized
treatment, a primary care physician will refer you to a
medical specialist.
• A medical specialist is a doctor who has received
additional training in a planning to become a primary
particular branch of medicine.

Nurses
• Nurses are licensed healthcare providers who work
in collaboration with doctors to care for patients.
• Registered nurses (RNs)
• observe and assess patient symptoms
• plan the best approach to promoting recovery
• evaluate progress
• counsel patients about ways to stay healthy and
prevent injury

Other Providers
• Physician assistants Physician assistants perform
many tasks previously done by doctors. These tasks may
include taking medical histories, performing physical
exams, and prescribing medications.
• Physical therapists Physical therapists help
patients with arthritis, muscle pain, fractures, burns,
strokes, or sports injuries.
• Registered dietitians Registered dietitians,
sometimes called nutritionists, may set up and
supervise food services for institutions.

Evaluating TV Doctors
Many television shows are set in hospitals.
How do different shows portray healthcare
providers? What effect might these shows
have on viewers’ attitudes toward doctors?
Evaluate a TV doctor using this questionnaire.
Slide 16 of 33
Section 24.1 The Healthcare System
Does the doctor give each patient the time and
attention he or she needs?
Does the doctor make patients feel comfortable
discussing personal information?
Does the doctor explain each patient’s condition in
terms that are easy to understand?
Is the doctor knowledgeable about patients’
conditions and medical options?
Does the doctor readily admit when he or she has
made a mistake?
“Yes” answers indicate positive qualities that patients should look for
in a doctor.

Healthcare Facilities
• Healthcare facilities include doctors’ offices, clinics,
hospitals, and long-term care centers.
• These facilities offer different levels of care.
Slide 19 of 33
Section 24.1 The Healthcare System
Doctors’ Offices
• Perhaps the most frequently used healthcare facility
is the doctor’s private office.
• Here doctors, nurse practitioners, or physician
assistants do routine examinations and tests to
diagnose and treat minor illnesses and injuries.
• Routine healthcare provided in a doctor’s office is
called primary healthcare.

Section 24.1 The Healthcare System
Clinics
• A clinic is a facility in which primary healthcare is
provided by one or more doctors and other
healthcare providers.
• An outpatient is a person admitted to a clinic for
tests or treatments that do not require an
overnight stay.
• A variety of tests and surgical procedures can be
performed at clinics.

Section 24.1 The Healthcare System
Hospitals
• Diagnosis and treatment of serious disorders require
the services of a hospital.
• Most hospitals also have emergency departments to
treat sudden conditions or injuries.
• Healthcare that is given to a patient in a hospital is
known as secondary healthcare.
• A patient who is required to stay in a hospital
overnight or longer is called an inpatient.
• Care provided in specialty hospitals and teaching
hospitals is called tertiary healthcare.

Technology and Healthcare
The Internet, e-mail, and other technologies can make
healthcare more efficient, and can make patients feel
more involved in their care.
Slide 26 of 33
Section 24.1 The Healthcare System
The Internet and Email
• Many people today gather health information on
the Internet.
• You should never rely on information you find on the
Internet without first discussing it with your doctor.
• Some doctors now use e-mail to communicate with
their patients about non-emergency health issues.

Computerized Imaging
• Many imaging techniques, including MRIs, CT scans,
and X-rays, are performed with computerized
equipment.
• Digital images allow doctors to share a patient’s
results more easily with other specialists.
Slide 28 of 33
Section 24.1 The Healthcare System
Robot Doctors
• In a growing number of hospitals, doctors may make
“virtual visits” to their patients.
• A robot allows the doctor and patient to see each
other and communicate even though they are in
separate locations.
• “Robot doctors” may prove to be especially useful for
hospitals in which medical specialists are not always
on site, or when one doctor rotates around to several
hospitals in one region.

Electronic Health Records
• Patients benefit when their body scans, test results,
or medical records can be shared efficiently between
providers.
• This type of file sharing, however, is not available
everywhere.
• Lawmakers are pushing for nationwide electronic
health records that will allow the efficient treatment of
patients—no matter where they are when they get
injured or become ill.
