The grand test of restore
• The goal of the test was to ensure the possibility to get all system up
and running in a hosted datacenter, if all server environments, including
the on-premise backup/restore control server was destroyed.
• The test included recreation of the necessary backup servers, the AD,
part of the exchange environment and part of the SQL servers.
• (Folketinget was the first customer demanding a test including
recreation of the backup/restore control server

Step 1: Create a new backup/restore

Windows 2008 installation.
CommVault-cs installation
From CommVault software DVD
IP addresses and host name should be found.
SQL Database path could also be found in the design document
Installing CommCell implemented
Check the SQL database paths are correct.
Reinstall all CommVault patches
Installing the Media Agent and Virtual Server Agent
CommCell server installed time : 100 min

Step 2: Getting the AD back
• One Domain Controller was restored as a image

Step 3: Make sure the restored Domain controller
is the one in charge - Seizing the DC

• The restored Domain Controller is now the master.

Step 4: Get exchange back as a image
• Ex2012mb01 has been restored. It took almost 11 hours.
• All databases were mounted without error after VMware restore.

Step 5: Test of the Exchange DB restore, in case
of corrupt DB in the image restore
• Restore of one exchange data via CommVault.
• Stop the following services, as they will try to address in the database
under restore:
• Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Assistants
• Microsoft Exchange Search Indexer

Step 6: SQL restore
• Complete server restore as image. Then, just as with exchange, a DB
restore was tested.

Conclusion
1. Restore the test was conducted and was shown that it was possible to
restore servers in ATEA's data center from remote backup copy.
2. There was established a physical server in the data center with a copy
of remote backup data. It took about 2 hours to restore CommVault
servers and be ready to restore.
3. Then, a ESX server was set , where the servers was restored .
4. Restore speed test be comparable to the production environment.
5. Domain controller was restored and all domain roles were forced to run
on this server.
6. Subsequently restored other servers and it was possible to log on to
the FT accounts.
7. Exchange server had 1 restored data store and it was mounted
correctly.
8. SQL Server was also restored, and it was possible to log on and data
was correct in the tables.
