Medicine Waste Campaign - 2012
• It is estimated that in SCSHA £10million of medicines are
currently prescribed, dispensed and unused.
• In February 2012, SCSHA will launch its first regional
medicines waste awareness campaign targeted at raising
public, patient and clinical awareness of the issue.
• Working with commercial company Dynamic Advertising, who
have successfully run this campaign in other areas.
• The campaign will predominately feature in GP surgeries,
Hospitals and Community Pharmacies, with the opportunity
for wider marketing on local bus routes and town centres in
some areas.
SCSHA = South Central Strategic Health Authority =
Southampton, Hampshire, IOW, Portsmouth, Oxfordshire,
Berkshire and Buckinghamshire

Medicine Waste Campaign - 2012
The campaign has three key communications:
• Only order what you need
• Please dispose of medicines appropriately / medicines
cannot be recycled
• Take your medicines into hospital with you (in a green POD
bag where possible)

Medicine Waste Campaign - 2012
• To make the campaign a real success and to make sure that
we get the best value for money possible from the campaign,
we need the support and involvement of all PCTs and Trusts
and in particular Pharmacy, GPs and Communications teams
working together.
• This campaign, delivered properly, really can make a
difference.
• We’d like to see it drive down orders for repeat medicines that
are not needed and increase the incidence of patients arriving
at hospital with their own medications.
• This campaign needs to be viewed as a platform /
springboard for further targeted work around the whole issue
of medicines waste across the whole SHA
