Treating the Person…
Not the Lyme
My background
• BS in Biochemistry 1998
• Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine, Bastyr University- 2003
• Naturopathic physician using both prescription and natural
treaments
• Practice focus is autism and adults with chronic illness not well
managed with conventional medicine
• I utilize autonomic response testing with all patients to help sort
through all of the treatment options and now teach for Dr.
Klinghardt’s academy showing others how to do this work
(www.klinghardtacademy.com)

• Create a safe sleeping environment (www.wehliving.org for
sleep santuary info and ideas to reduce EMR’s)
• Do not identify with your illness- You are NOT a Lymie…you
are a person who is fighting the microbe
• Be able to see yourself getting better….If you can’t, this needs
to be worked on first (RET, MFT, EFT, bach flowers)
• Practice your faith or meditation routinely
• MFT tapping (will be discussed by Andreanna Rainville in
depth) is a great practice to connect and release emotional
issues that get stuck physically
• Creating a lower stress environment at home is also crucial

Addressing the Higher Levels
Working on stress
• Get a support system
• Explain to people around you that this is
biological and NOT a behavioral or psychological
condition
• Communicate with your spouse
• Communicate with your child’s teachers
• Breathe/meditate/journal/tap/exercise
• Envision yourself or your child improving
• Create a time for yourself
• POSITIVE THINKING

Top 10 List
(add a multi-mineral, reduce multi-vitamins)
Top 10 List
(basics to do before you
ever go to the doctor)

•
1- Life- Add pleasure, subtract stress
2- Energy- add sunshine and nature, subtract EMF’s at night
3- Water- add purity and structure, subtract DBP’s and fluoride
4- Food- go organic and choose real food
5- Exercise- get moving
6- Tests- more intention testing than stressful labs
7- Emotions- Subtract negative speak
8- Body- subtract focal lesions
9- Supplements- Add minerals, Subtract multi-vitamins and do
calcium only around growth spurts
• 10- Detox- Add clean air, subtract shoes inside…
Essential Baseline Minerals
• Magnesium:
- Minimum 200m up to 800mg or more
- Helps move the bowels and support muscle and connective tissue
- This gets very deficient in KPU cases and in most chronic illness
- Magnesium Glycinate or malate are my favorites
- Use whatever form works and is tolerated…MUSCLE TEST!
- Magnesium Citrate is often not as good…more of a bowel effect
and not so much for systemic issues (great if constipated)
• My favorite multi-minerals:
Minerals of Life by www.worldhealthmall.com
Comprehensive Minerals by Cardiovascular Research
MineraLL
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
• Most food sources are completely deficient, even if we all had guts that
could absorb properly. Common symptoms of magnesium deficiency
are often headaches, muscle cramps, and constipation.
Diet
• Gluten and dairy seem to be the biggest issues for most
• Gluten has been found to trigger auto-immune thyroid
antibodies and for many triggers inflammation systemically
• Cow dairy has been found to increase folate receptor
blocking and binding antibodies (camel milk also does this)
• For most, following a more anti-inflammatory diet avoiding
gluten and casein is a good place to start (regardless of what
labs do or do not show)
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
• Most gluten available in the U.S. is GMO, which contributes
to leaky gut
Foundational
Basic Nutrients and Organ Support
Toxin Binders and Drainage Remedies
to help with symptom management
Where to start???
• Clean up the diet
• Reducing stress levels at home
• Getting a baseline nutritional protocol going- omega 3’s, vit D, minerals,
probiotics
• Make sure there is adequate fluid intake
• Tools like regulation thermography (www.alfavue.com), Zyto/Asyra,
Autonomic Response testing (www.klinghardtacademy.com) and others
can help point you in the right direction
• Labs can also be very helpful to establish toxic or microbial burdens or
underlying deficiencies
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
• Reducing toxic exposures and EMR’s
• Before doing any anti-microbial or metal treatments, you
absolutely have to support the detox organs:
- Kidneys
- Liver
- gut
- skin/lymph
• Never do more killing or metal mobilizing than what the
body can eliminate!

This organ is an absolute must to support if you are chelating metals!!!
Electrolyte Drink
• Rehydrate the cells to restore better function
• Consider the BioPure Matrix Electrolytes or ELyte- 1-2
capfuls/Liter of water
• Newer research seems to show that potassium-based salts
and adding a source of glucose helps the cells actually get
hydrated
• If following the recipes to make your own, start with ½ cup
daily and increase gradually
• This alone can stimulate a detox reaction
• Fluid intake of water should be at least ½ of your body weight
(lbs) in ounces

(Suspect this with sluggish bowels and in general overly sensitive to any treatments)
• Diagnostechs ASI saliva testing is very useful
My favorite treatments are:
• Eleutherococcus
• Ashwaganda
• Rhodiola
• Licorice
• Phosphatidyl serine (especially for insomnia or elevated
cortisol)
• DHEA (adults only and dose low)
• Lifetime Calm and Calmer
• B vitamins
• Adrenal Cortex Extracts and Glandulars (avoid the medulla

vit C in freqeunt doses
Get enough water
magnesium citrate or oxide
JLB by New Sun- 2-4 at bedtime
Aloe- I especially like capsules from Priority One
Address dysbiosis
castor oil packs over abdomen
Colonics or enemas
High doses of probiotics
Rule out food allergies (especially dairy)
Digestive enzymes
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
Address Constipation
My favorite toxin binders
• Chlorella- bigger doses are more binding. Typically 1000mg or more
per 50 lbs body weight
• Mila- 1 Tbls soaked in water for 30-60 min daily
• Sonne bentonite liquid- 1 Tbls in large glass of water up to 2x/day
• Charcoal- this is the #1 suggestion when people call the office in
crisis. If it constipates, chase it 30 min later with magnesium citrate
• Pure Encapsulations Cholestepure- This is nice when other binders
are too constipating
• Chelators- things like DMSA, EDTA, DMPS or microsilica are very
useful especially when the person has a high metal load
• Cholestyramine- especially for severely neurotoxic people or those
with severe mold issues. Traditional products contain aspartame, so
ask for “no aspartame” or get it compounded without sweeteners
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
• New Sun Fiber Cleanse without psyllium- usually 2-3 tsp daily
Herx Support (die off management)
• Epsom salt baths- 2 cups in the tub or 1 cup in a leg soak. Good
source of magnesium.
• Baking soda baths with up to 8 cups
• Anti-inflammatories (see last section) or anti-histamines
• Coffee enemas- These really get things moving fast and are
essential for those who get overloaded quickly. Use an organic
(ideally green) coffee, and start in small strength and work up.
This helps dilate the bile ducts to allow a better liver/GB/bile
release
• colonics- Do 3 in a close amount of time to start off, then do
weekly until symptoms are improving
• Homeopathic drainage: Pekana detox and drainage kit, Heel
Detox Kit…
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
• Vit C in frequent doses- with each meal and at bedtime, natural
anti-histamine
Herx Support (die off management)
• Nutramedix Burbur detox and/or pinella- Can be dosed up to
every 15 minutes during a crisis
• Proteolytic enzymes- these are systemic enzymes taken away
from food to clean up the blood and matrix. Some of my
favorites:
• Vitalzym X
• Wobenzym
• Boluoke
• Zyflamend
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
• Beyond Balance Tox Ease GL liquid- This really seems to clean
things up cellularly and in the tissue space. Dose this 3 times
daily.
Clean House
Slowly start KPU and methylation
protocols
continue binders and drainage...
KPU- Kryptopyrroluria
• KPU/HPU is a defect of 8 enzymes needed for heme synthesis
• This is a common issue in possibly over 80% of Lyme patients and
likely higher in autism.
• Lab testing is done at Health Diagnostics Lab
• For more information on this go to:
http://andreannarainville.com/dr_klinghardt.html
• Treatments involve: zinc, B6, manganese, Biotin primarily
• BioPure CORE has been designed specifically to address this
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
• HPU patients have low serum glutathione levels, high NO levels,
low histamine
• Folic Acid (folates)
- 5-MTHF- reduced form of folate that crosses the BBB and
concentrated 2-4 times higher, binds to a folate receptor in the
choroid plexus and then is delivered to CSF (ATP dependent)
- Folinic- can also cross the BBB (most current research using this
form)
• B12
- Methyl B12- acts as a methyl donor and has been the form most
used over the last few years. Best clinical response has been with
nasal or injections. Sublingual next best option.
- Hydroxy B12- this is becoming more available and seems to
complement the higher doses of 5-MTHF better
Amy Derksen, ND

•
B6 as pyridoxine or P5P (can be added to injections)
SamE
Taurine (has a very calming effect)
Glycine
BioPure Core or KPU support
Pantothenic Acid
Betaine HCL or TMG
Niacin
Other possibilities looking into Dr Amy Yasko’s approach
Note: when you get methylation working, patients may start to
dump toxins. Binders and support of elimination is useful.
Amy Derksen, ND

Addressing Methylation Defects- Secondary
Support
5-MTHF
• OTC products I like:
- Metagenics FolaPro (800mcg tablet)
- Thorne 5-MTHF (1 and 5mg capsules)- also note that all of
their products use this form instead of plain folic acid
- Klaire Labs L-Methylfolate (1mg) and Active B12/folate
(1mg with mB12)
- Xymogen 5-MTHF (2 or 10mg)
• Prescription products:
- Deplin (7.5mg and 15mg tabs)
• Injectables:
- Compounding pharmacies are making this in a 10mg/mL
strength- good to do this twice a week around 5mg or more
(ok in conjunction with B12 and B6)
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
• This seems to be a crucial supplement that has been in use for several
years, but dramatically under-dosed. Treatments go as high as 1-2mg/kg
body weight (max 50mg)
• Most research is using this form, but so far the most
experienced practitioners who do more energetic testing or
holistic care are finding the 5-MTHF folate to be better
tolerated
• OTC products:
- Thorne Folacal (1mg)
- Many others…
• Prescription:
- Leucovorin- 5 and 25mg tabs and injections
- this product does contain yellow dyes, etc.
• Injectables:
- Compounded available at 10mg/mL standard without
preservative
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
Folinic Acid
Hydroxy B12
• Injectable forms:
- compounded in a 10mg/mL strength preservative free
- often giving 5mg in conjunction with 5-MTHF shots
• Oral forms:
- Perque Activated B12 Guard- 2mg per tab
- Scientific Botanicals Hydroxycobalamin- drops
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
• We are finding this to be the best tolerated form of B12 once
you push 5-MTHF doses
• Folate Receptor (FR) autoantibodies- first found in 2005 and
can be measured in the blood
• Block the FR binding site in the choroid plexus
• Associated with Rett and low functioning ASD
• Higher amounts of antibody, mean lower amounts of MTHF
folate in the CSF
• Above 1 pmoles FR blocked/mmol tends to show significant
changes in levels
• 10-15% of people in US has this (per Dr Rossignol’s research)
• Result is normal levels 5MTHF in body but below normal levels
in the CSF since receptors are blocked
• Lab is currently moving from a university lab to a new facility
(should be available shortly)
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
Folate Receptor (FR) autoantibodies
• Cows milk contains a folate receptor 91% similar to our folate
receptor….this sets us up to make more antibodies against the folate
receptors in our brain
• Goat and human milk stimulate this much, much less
• Up to 23/25 of kids with low functioning ASD early onset (nonregressive) had CFD and 19/23 had the serum FR autoantibodies.
Partial or complete recovery was seen after 12 months of folinic acid
• Treatment 0.5-1mg/kg divided BID with folinic, possibly 3 years or
longer
• Folic acid is contraindicated since it has a higher binding affinity to
folate receptors than 5MTHF and could further deplete the CNS
levels
• Go off: camel and cow milk, colostrum (all can stimulate autoantibodies)
Cerebral Folate Receptor Autoantibodies in Autism Spectrum Disorder. Mol Psychiatry. 2012 Jan 10. Doi.10.1038
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
Cerebral Folate Deficiency (CFD)
• MTHFR gene testing (most significant is homozygous C677T)- Spectracell,
Labcorp or Quest all offer this
• Health Diagnostics Lab offers a full methylation panel test (looking at
folates, glutathione and B12)
• CBC shows chronic elevated MCV not responsive to B12 (or someone who
tends to have red urine after a B12 shot)
• Folate receptor binding and blocking antibodies (lab should be available in
the next couple months again)
• Methylmalonic acid as best measure of B12
• RBC and serum folate levels
• Serum B12- rarely low, but if it is the patient is in serious need
• Meridian Valley lab neutrophil hypersegmentation % -the lower the better.
Higher percentages indicate there are more 5 lobed immature neutrophils
in the blood that don’t seem to have enough folate to mature properly.
(good article by Dr Jonathan Wright June 2010 Nutrition and Healing)
• Do NOT worry about high B12 or folate in the serum (this may just be
reflective of poor transport into the cell)- think pancreatic insufficiency,
lack of intrinsic factor, bacterial intestinal overgrowth
• CSF folate levels are also being done in some autistic children
Amy Derksen, ND

- Serrapeptase (especially for yeast)
- Klaire Interfase or Interfase Plus
- Kirkman Biofilm Defense
- Lumbrokinase (Boluoke)
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
Especially useful if you are not getting ahead of infection:
- SPS 30 by Theramedix (www.theramedix.net)
Microbes and
Biofilm
Rule out Mold Exposures
• Go to www.survivingmold.com to learn more about Ritchie
Shoemaker’s protocols and testing
• There can be an allergy or immune/inflammatory reaction
• Patients that are agitated when it rains or after going to the library or
church
• Often allergic shiners and multiple small lymph nodes all the time in
neck
• Snoring/sinus issues/generally very sensitive to odors and foods
• Big link I see with CFS or those who are overly sensitive in general
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
• Suspect with patients that have “yeast” issues within days of
discontinuing anti-fungals
Mold Sensitivity Approaches
• bind up neurotoxins- high doses of EPA and DHA,
charcoal, Cholestyramine, bentonite
• Pleo Nig given 2-3 times daily
• Do an ERMI to check the home or check mycotoxins
in the patient or the home (Cyrex Labs). Look for
elevated TGF beta-1 or C4a levels.
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
• stabilize mast cells (look up Dr. Theoharides)quercetin, hydroxyzine, ketotifen, benedryl, vit C
• Vit D- doses up to 20,000IU daily may be needed in climates
like Seattle. Per Dr Mercola’s latest research typical dose
needed is 35 IU/lb and I find serum level goal is 60-80 for
best effect. Average adult needs are around 8000IU daily
and kids 50IU/lb (good idea to lab test regularly to get a
good sense of proper dose)- balance this with at least 1mg of
K2 for best tolerance and effect
• GcMAF or Homeo K-Guard – nagalase testing by Health
Diagnostics Lab will be elevated, indicating suppression of
macrophages (lab indicators for success are low CD57 and
elevated nagalase)- www.biopure.eu for K-Guard
• IVIG in extreme cases (indicated on labs by low
immunoglobulin levels)
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
Boosting the immune system
• Immune XL Plus- www.immunexl.com – extract from the Pacific
Yew Tree- supports the body's ability to resist viral and bacterial
infections, promotes normal cell growth, strengthens and
enhances the immune system. What I see is an increase in WBC’s
in my patients who have previously been low. It works fantastic
with mushroom products.
• Biocidin- 5 drops twice daily to 3 times daily at first signs of
infection (be more aggressive with Strep). This also seems to be
great for fungal and bacterial issues and cuts through biofilms
• Consider constitutional homeopathy
• Address the tonsils!
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
Boosting the immune system
• Mushroom extracts-more exotic mushrooms tend to be
better. All appear to help boost NK cell activity.
Mushroom products I particularly like:
- Host Defense Cordychi and MyCommunity
by Fungi Perfecti (they make capsules and liquids)
- Mycopotent Immune Complex by Biogenesis
(liquid I do for young kids)
- Researched Nutritionals Transfer Factor Multi-Immune
- Econugenics Ten Mushroom Formula
• AHCC is the active hexanose compound in mushrooms - Use
the extract if people are sensitive to the mushroom products
- Pure Encapsulations Myco-AHCC
- many other options
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
Boosting the immune system
• Product in use for past 20 years- mainly 3rd world HIV
clinical trials and some use with cancer
• Seeing significant lab changes within 30 days
• Surfactant product that is:
antioxidant
anti-bacterial
anti-viral
anti-fungal
increases cellular hydration
helps to decrease inflammation
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
Immusist Natural(www.immusist.com)
Immusist Natural
• I am finding this particularly useful for chronic EBV and those with WBC’s that fall
into the upper 2’s to low 3’s. Also with those who seem to have poor absorption
(like those we are considering IV antibiotics with)
• It is thought to cross the BBB and clinically appears to do so
• Goal with this is to repair the immune system to take care of itself
•
•
•
•
Adult dosing: work up to 16 drops TID
Child dosing: work up to 8 drops TID
Sensitive people or very sick: 1-2 drops many times a day
Maintenance after symptoms are stabilized, dose once daily
Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
• Many of the kids I work with went on it on their own and we have seen:
- better reports at school
- less aggravation with winter illnesses
- overall cognitive improvements
- other meds start being needed in lower doses
My favorite natural Lyme treatments
• Samento (Cat’s Claw) - doses up to 30 drops twice daily (adults),
working up slow and backing off if a herx occurs. Do this in
combination with Nutramedix Banderol, which is often doses up to
double.
• Artemesia- pulsed for Babesia and parasites- 100-200mg 5 days a
week
• Nutramedix Cumanda- particularly good if there are joint issues. Up
to 30 drops daily, well tolerated. This is typically alternated with
Samento.
• Beyond Balance Bb-1 and Bb-2 - classic doses up to 8 drops twice
daily typically for kids, but adults I may go much higher. Well
tolerated and glycerite based for better taste than other tinctures.
• Byron White A-L complex- this is a low dose product!
Amy Derksen, NDwww.holistichealingarts.org
• BioPure Quintessence- This is a mix of Stephen Buhner’s top 5 herbs
and has a very nice synergy and tolerance- for kids I do up to 2
dropperfuls twice daily and adults twice that amount.
My favorite natural co-infection treatments
• Nutramedix Enula- Adults needing up to 30 drops BID for
3-4 months (Babesia)
• Colloidal Silver- dosage varies with the product
• Beyond Balance Bab-1, Bar-1, Clarity K and Clarity K detox
• Woodland Essences CSA formula (Cryptolepsis, Sida Acuta, Alchornea) or
plain Cryptolepsis (Babesia)
• Neem
• Byron White A-Bab and A-Bart – low doses!
• Bartonella is stubborn and often requires high doses of biofilm enzymes!
• Rectal suppositories (in coconut oil) are well tolerated and effective
• Don’t forget to think about parasites (often prescriptions are needed)
Amy Derksen, NDwww.holistichealingarts.org
• Researched Nutritionals Transfer Factor LymPlus or Transfer Factor PlasMyc1-2 daily
• Rule out MARCoNS with a nasal swab test (Diagnostic
Laboratory Medicine 781-275-0855)
• Quercetin is great for inflammation and pressure
• Super Good Stuff Nasal Wash has been one of my
favorites
• BEG nasal spray (if it is MARCoNS) from Hopkinton Drug
• Wise Woman Herbals Nasosympatico on a q-tip
• Neural therapy (with or without ozone)
• Neti Pot
• Biocidin- 4-5 drops in a 1 oz saline or xylitol nasal spray
• Address biofilms: Enzymedica Mucostop, Klaire Interfase
Plus, Serrapeptase

Natural anti-inflammatories
• Address gut inflammation
- stool labs can show inflammatory indicators
(Genova, Metametrix, Diagnostechs)
- Brain inflammation and excessive excitatory neurotransmitters
often are triggered by the digestive tract
- Never forget to address the gut!
Gastrointestinal Immune System and Brain Dialogue Implicated in Neuroinflammatory and Neurodegenerative
Diseases. Curr Mol. Med. 2011 Nov;11(8) 696-707.
• Melatonin
- high doses are found to be neuroprotective
- Protective against damage from methyl mercury
- Clinically shown to calm many neurological symptoms

Amy Derksen, ND
www.holistichealingarts.org
Natural anti-inflammatories
• Ketotifen- gut anti-histamine that can help reduce reactivity,
reduces the histamine trigger of epinephrine and other neuroexcitotoxins, and generally helps to calm things down. Used for
6-12 months to help heal leaky gut. Start with 1mg at bedtime
and slowly work up to a max of 2mg QID before meals and at
bedtime.
• LDN Low Dose Naltrexone- www.lowdosenaltrexone.com- In
low doses of 4.5 mg or less this acts as an immune modulator
to reduce auto-immunity and inflammation, help energy and
boost immune function like natural killer cells. For sensitive
individuals or known auto-immunity, start with 1.5 mg each
night at bedtime and increase by 1.5mg increments monthly up
to 4.5 mg. Some patients are needing as much as 12 or 25mg
for effect.

Prescriptions to consider:
• Now suspecting that chronic illness and toxicity can trigger
mitochondrial dysfunction
• Can present at any age
• Many patients have dysfunction not at the full level of disease
• Many neuro and psych disorders are associated
• Normal aging is associated with a decline in mito function
• Dev delays, motor delay, fatigue, seizures, hypotonia, ataxia
• Off balance
• Opthalmoplegia
• Stroke like episodes
• Migraines
