The Individual and
Society…Socialization
I
Socially awkward
 What
does it mean?
 What might cause
someone to be “socially
awkward”?
 Describe the traits of
someone who is
socially awkward (do
not name names!!!)
Socializaton
 Learning
the roles, statuses, behaviors,
and values necessary for participation in
society.
 Simply put… being able to live around
other people.
 Journal write… what are you like
socially…how do you think the group
sees you??? (Try to be honest with
yourself)
Psychology review…





Personality= sum total of all behaviors,
attitudes, beliefs, and values characteristic
of an individual.
Instinct= unchanging biologically inherited
behavior pattern.
I= the spontaneous, creative part of the
self.
Me= the self as social object.
Example… when your alarm goes off in
the a.m. the “I” says roll over and keep
sleeping, the “me” knows that you need to
fulfill your role and get up and go to class.
Social Psychology
Where psych and sociology MEET…
 PSYCH
+ SOCIOLOGY
= SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
 Study of how an individual’s behavior and
personality (psych) are affected by the social
environment and others (sociology).

 This
has absolutely NOTHING to do
with Sociology, but I had to share it
with you…
Socialization…nature vs. nurture
Does heredity give us patterns of social
behavior or does environment dictate how
we act socially?
 In other words, am I born an outgoing
leader or does that environment/
atmosphere that I grow up in make me that
way?
 Sociologists continue to debate this, but one
thing is for sure… nature is never enough.

Discussion…



What is one social trait you think you have because of
nature?
What is one social trait you think you have because of
nurture?
GO BACK TO YOUR “I AM” WORKSHEET AND
LOOK AT WHAT YOU WROTE. NEXT TO
EACH, WRITE IF YOU FEEL YOU ARE THIS
WAY BECAUSE OF NATURE OR BECAUSE OF
NURTURE.
WHAT IF…



You didn’t meet people other than your parents
until you were five, ten, or even fifteen?
You were completely isolated?
ANTHROPHOBIA= FEAR OF PEOPLE OR
SOCIETY.


Factors that Shape Individual Personality Development
Heredity: physical traits, aptitudes (capacity to
learn), inherited characteristics, biological
drives. Simply put, you get a lot of who you
are from your parents.
Birth Order: We are influenced by siblings
and whether or not we are first, middle, last,
etc.
www.childdevelopmentinfo.com/development/birth_order.htm
Parental Characteristics: The age of your
parents, level of education, economic status,
heritage, etc all “rub off on you”… again…
you get a lot of who you are from your
parents…like it or not.
Culture… the culture that we identify with has
a profound effect on who we become.
Isolation in Childhood





What if you had no contact with
others… you were unsocialized.
These children are called FERAL
CHILDREN.
Most recent case= Genie
Studies of feral children are central to the
nature vs. nurture debate.
What do you think… which has more
effect Nature or nurture????
Institutionalization



What happens to the development of children
in orphanages or hospitals… limited social
contact.
Some characteristics of isolated children.
Within two years of one study half of the
children had “wasted away” and died. Of those
that survived, fewer than 25% could walk by
themselves, use a spoon, or dress themselves.
Only one could form complete sentences.
