Title: Gender Identity and agents of

Starter:
In pairs, discuss which agents of
socialisation are to blame for
‘changing traditional masculine and
feminine identities’
Extension: Why? What are they doing
to change gender role perception?
All (grade D/C): Can identify and explain at least 2 agents of
socialisation and give examples of how they have helped
change traditional gender role perceptions. Some key terms
used.
Most(grade C/B): Can outline and explain at least 3 agents of
socialisation, describing how they have contributed to the
change in gender role perceptions. Key terms and studies are
used throughout
Some (Grade B/A) Can critically evaluate the ways in which agents
of socialisation have contributed to a change in traditional gender
role perceptions. Reference to studies and key terms used. Begin
to question whether traditional gender roles have changed
People’s social status, social roles, norms, values
and identity will generally depend on whether
they are classified as masculine or feminine.
Sociologists argue we learn these characteristics
through gender-role socialisation.
We have already looked at how family and
education influence gender roles, but what about
the other agents of socialisation? Do they not
influence gender?
Task:
• Religion - Aisha
• Media- Sharntelle
• Workplace- Ellie
• School- Sara R
• Peers- Sara A
You must explain back to the class how these agents influence
gender role socialisation. Use the sheets and your own knowledge
to help you. Include any studies which were used!
Jetmira, Victoria and Amnah you have a different task! You will
challenge each of the above and argue why they do not influence
gender role socialisation!
• Write a heading for each agent of socialisation
and make notes under each one as the person
explains HOW it influences gender role
socialisation.
• Also include any of the challenges the others
ask- these could be your arguments against!
You will need these if the exam asks you to
outline and explain!!
