MAGNETISM
&
ELECTRICITY
Magnetism
• The attraction of one
magnet to another
Magnetic Pole
• The area around the
magnet where the
magnetic effect is
strongest
– Like poles repel
• South ,South
• North ,North
– Unlike poles attract
• South ,North
Magnetic Field
• The region of
magnetic force
around a magnet.
– this allows magnets to
interact without
touching
Iron bearing metals
• Materials that shows
strong magnetic
effects
– Iron
– Nickel
– cobalt
What is Static Electricity ?
• The build up of charge on an object
• These charges do not flow
• Rubbing certain materials together is a
build up of static electricity.
• Lightning is static electricity.
Benjamin Franklin
• Discovered lightning
was an electric
current and built the
first lightning rod.
Electric Current
• Current: flow of electrons through a
material
Circuits
• A pathway taken by an electric current.
– Closed circuits: allow the movement of
electrical energy
– Open circuits: stop the movement of electrical
energy.
Circuits
• Series Circuit: only
one path for current
to flow through
• Parallel Circuit:
more than one path
for current to flow
through
How does electricity move?
• Conductors: allow electricity to move
through them (metals)
• Insulators: do not allow electricity to move
through them (rubber, plastic, wood)
Electromagnet
• Current flowing through a wired that’s
been wrapped around an iron-bearing
metal. This is a temporary magnet.
Michael Faraday
Discovered that an
electric motor could
be made using
electricity and
magnetism.
