• Zoologists study all
aspects of animal
life, including where
and how animals
live and how they
interact with their
surroundings.
Personal Qualities
• Zoologists should be
observant, inquiring,
imaginative and
open-minded. They
should also be
practical and
accurate, patient,
self-motivated and
logical.
Education
• Zoologists need to
have a Bachelor of
Science (with or
without honors) in
zoology or ecology
to enter the job.
Further
postgraduate study
in relevant subjects
is preferred.
Useful Experience
• It is useful for
zoologists to have
experience in
conservation work
and research and
laboratory work.
Some experience
working with
animals is useful.
Salary
• Zoologists usually
earn between
$30,000 and
$70,000 per year.
Many zoologists
work as university
lecturers and salary
for university
lecturers ranges
from $37,000 to
$76,000.
Tasks and Duties
 dissect animals, and sketch animals and
their parts
 study the relationship between animals
and their environment
 work out ways to control pests
 carry out laboratory and fieldwork
 work out ways to help conserve species
at risk
 give talks to community groups and local
authorities
Training on the Job
• Zoologists gain
some skills on the
job. They may also
attend training
courses in
management and
computer skills.
