What is Stats about?
using history to predict the future
to be awarded University Entrance,
you must:
achieve at least 14 credits from a range of
approved standards
this course gives you the opportunity to achieve
up to 12 credits through internal assessment.
This means you have to do the external exam!
and no, I will not change my mind about that.
Why study Stats?
Business management uses detailed stat and
modelling analysis of data from all parts of business
operation - sales (what, how much, to who, when etc),
costs (wages, rent, buildings, product purchase,
manufacture, transport etc) and market research
Governments (national, regional and local) use
statistics to model future needs, to help them develop
new policies
Science depends upon statistics - examples include
medical drug trials, experimental observations,
population studies.
the standards for the course are...
AS91581 investigate bivariate data Internal, 4
Conceptually rewarding, it studies relationships
between distinct qualities.
AS91580 Investigate time series data Internal, 4
this is based on commerce - eg sales records but is also useful for science data analysis
AS91582 Use statistical methods to make a formal inference Internal, 3
the most important standard, it uses historic data
and develops probability theory. Often used for
scientific
trial data
analysis and
popular 4
surveys.
AS91585 Apply probability concepts
in solving
problems
External,
Very visual and straight-forward. You get to draw
Venn Diagrams and learn basic set theory.
AS91586 Apply probability distributions in solving problems External, 4
Explores alternative distributions in probability
theory and practice, with different data types.
