Data and Probability
Quarter 3
Mrs. Dunbar
Probability, or chance, is how likely
something is to happen.

If something has a low probability, it is
unlikely to happen.

If something has a high probability, it is
likely to happen.

If something is certain, then there is no other
possibility that something else could happen.

If something is impossible, then there is no
way it could happen.
Example

This bag has ten
cheeseburgers and one
hamburger inside. It is likely
when I reach inside and
grab one, that I will grab a
cheeseburger. It is unlikely
that I will grab a hamburger,
but it is not impossible. It is
not certain that I will grab a
cheeseburger because it is
possible that I could grab a
hamburger.
This bag contains 1 blue marble
 12 red marbles
What is the probability
that you would reach in
and pull out a red
marble?

that you would reach in
and pull out a green

What is the probability of……
going to lunch today?
spaghetti falling from the sky?
you taking a breath?
your teacher making you use your pencil?
your pencil breaking?
you turning into a frog?
the sun coming up tomorrow?
