Understanding the group stage:
Starter: Country trumps (a game which compares vital
statistics about each country that participates) (Cardiff
Crew)
Main: What is the minimum number of points needed in
the group stage to qualify?
What is the minimum number of points needed in
the group stage to win the group?
What is the minimum number of goals needed to
score to win the World Cup?
MATHS: Combinations, statistics, percentages

 Do you like them?
 Do you think they are fair?
 Do you think they are a lottery?
 Do you think footballers should practice them?
 Do you think there is something better?
 Only 33% enjoy watching penalty shootouts when their team is involved
 But 84% enjoy watching other teams suffer in penalty shootouts
 Only half of our respondents are happy that penalty shootouts are used in

games when their team is involved
69% believe that if footballers practice taking penalties they will increase
the likelihood of scoring in a shootout
Only 35% believe that the possibility of going to a shootout influences the
nature of the football during the first 90 minutes
But 87% believe that the possibility of going to a shootout influences the
nature of the football during extra time
51% of people who expressed a view believe that penalty shootouts are a
lottery
People are evenly split on whether extra time should be extended to two
periods of 20 minutes rather than two periods of 15 minutes
Half of the people surveyed believed there was a better way than penalty
shootouts to determine the result of drawn games in international football
tournaments

Penalty shoot-outs: You can never
tell who will win. Or can you?
 On the probability line below mark down where you
think the probability of each person scoring will be.

The scenario:
 You are the manager of England in this year’s World
Cup. You have successfully steered your team to the
Final against Brazil!
However, after 90 minutes and 30 minutes extra time
played the score is still 0 – 0. The winner of the World
Cup is to be decided on penalties!
As the management team your group must decide the
5 players that will take the penalties and take England
to their first World Cup victory since 1966....
Who to choose?
There are many factors that
affect who the best players
may be to choose from your
team:Ability to handle pressure
Position played
Age
How tired players are
How to succeed in a penalty
shoot-out

Time to get working!
 Your group will be given 2 sheets. One sheet will have
the vital details of who, statistically, does the better in
penalties – e.g. Those under 23 do better than those
older.
 You will also be given a sheet of all your players on the
pitch.
 Finally, you will be asked to give the 5 penalty takers to
your teacher who will feed them into the computer
and tell you how many goals England will score!

I am working in a TV station and the full time scores are
coming in for a round of results. Unfortunately , although I
know the half time results the full time results have been emailed in WITHOUT the names of the teams on.
Can you quickly attach the correct results together?
Is it generally true that the team that was winning at half time
won the match?

What is contextualised learning?
 Starting with a theme and looking at what meaningful
maths can come from this theme
Or
 Start with the maths – can we put it into a meaningful
context?
