Every four years people enjoy the World Cup Soccer
Tournament. However, every year another “world cup soccer
tournament” gives scientists exciting challenges. What is this
“world cup”? People call it the RoboCup. In this tournament
robots play soccer!
The RoboCup is an international project.
Some Japanese
scientists thought of the idea. They started an international
robot soccer competition
in 1997. The goal of the
RoboCup is a victory
against the human world
champion team by 2050.

Scientists use the game of soccer
to develop robot technology. Why
did they choose soccer?
Soccer
needs teamwork. Players have to
communicate with each other.
敵・味方を判断し,攻守能力も備えた
Besides, the sport is popular all ヒューマノイドロボット(2005年)
over the world. Young people may become interested in robot
technology through this competition.
In order to make a soccer-playing robot, scientists need
different kinds of technologies.
What is necessary then?
Does a robot only have to move quickly and kick the ball very
fast ? No. To play with human players, a robot should have
a soft body. It needs to choose the best play in a very short
time. Moreover, a robot should understand human players’
actions and expressions. There are still many problems to solve.

As scientists work toward their goal, many new technologies
are born. They hope that they can apply them to many other
fields. For example, we can use robots in a disaster to rescue
people.
Robots may be able to take care of sick and old
people. They may become good friends
with our children in the future.
Technology develops very fast. It took
only about 70 years from the Wright ライト兄弟のテスト飛行(1903年)
Brothers’ aircraft to Apollo 11. And it
アポロ11号の
月面着陸
took only about 50 years from the
(1969年)
invention of the computer to Deep Blue.
Someday we may be able to enjoy a soccer
game between human and robot players.
Which headline do you want to see first in the newspaper,
“Robots Beat Humans” or “Japan Wins the World Cup”?
