Comprehensible Input.

This is NOT Comprehensible Input!

COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT

The language acquirer understands the input.

CI is essential to language acquisition and literacy.

Comprehended input (intake) is what counts, not just input that is
potentially comprehensible.

Comprehensible input should also contain language that has not
yet be acquired but which the learner is ready to acquire (i + 1).

The more comprehensible input provided, the more language
acquisition and literacy developed.

MINIMIZING ENGLISH *

Avoid English by simplifying.
 Avoid English by providing CI.
 Plan lessons that avoid idle time.
 Post high-frequency words and expressions
around the classroom.
 Teach ‘negotiation of meaning’ by not yielding.

Encourage circumlocution
 Encourage expressions of clarification and
assistance:
– “I don’t understand.”
– “Please repeat.”
– “Help, please.”
* Do not teach grammar points in the target language.
