Social Neworks as the support
of the e-Learning

Phenomen of e-Learning
 Easy access to study resources
 Independency
 Individual study planning
 Ect.
BUT
 Motivation and demotivation
 Study management - who is expert in it
 Lonely student and learning from the screen
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
Distance education – Anachronism ?
NO !
 Principles still and ever be true
 E-Learning is Distance Education with other means of
transmission


Quicker
More flexible
Worse managible (LMS are only tool)
Better visible

Keeping the principles
Dream about quality in e-Learning is lost, if we will
not keep the principles of Distance Education (DE)
What principles we mean?
 Separation of teaching nad learning processes
 Organisation of study process is qualification (LMS is tool)
 Studyguide must be available (including FAQ)
 Management of the study path in the hands of study provider,
because of the responsibility for learning outcomes
 Learning outcomes – expected change of competences must
be well defined
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
Objectives of knowledge transfer
Classification of e-Learning courses
 E-Transfer of Information
 E-transfer of Information with confirmation of acceptance
 E.transfer of Information with confirmation of understanding
 Knowledge based (informative) short e-Course
 Knowledge based (informative) long e-Course
 Competence based (formative) short e-Course
 Competence based (formative) long e-Course
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
The crucial problem
How to measure the change?
Face to face examination is easy - WHY?
Distance education needs to formulate better the:
 Course objective
 To describe the objective (to be measurable)
 To formulate teachers contribution to the change
 To think about the ways how to achieve the change
 To verify starting situation (knowledge, skills, competences)
 To formulate final knowledge, skills, competences
 To find the tool how to measure the change or achievements
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
Case study
What is the objective of study
acoustics for architects ?
 To learn formula?
 To be able to fulfil formula?
 To be able to calculate acoustics?
 To be expert in acoustics?
NO !
 To know, how the acoustics works
 To be partner for negotiation with expert on acoustic
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
First conclusion
 Importance do define the objective
 Importance to look for the appropriate way of testing
 Importance to manage communication
 Importance to understand LMS as a tool !
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
LMS versus social networks
 Learning Management System
 Sophisticated teaching / learning system
 A lot of functions and facilites (much more, what the teachers
are able to use)
 Easy insertion of study materials
 Managible communication
 Social network
 Not only system, but environment
 Weak possibility to manage the processes (individual approach)
 Without adaptation inapplicable
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
Advantages of Social Networks
 Users friendly – people know it
and they are familier to
operate with this
 Extremely communicative
environment
 Easy insertion of files (namely
pics)
 Feeling of freedom and
individual decission making
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
Disadvantages of Social networks
 Management of courses complicated
 Monitoring od study progress difficult
 More discipline by students needed
(they are not prepared for this)
 Insertion of special files impossible
 Communication not under control
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
Real problems
 Enthusiasm comming from the



broader communication
Communication doesnt help in study
Conventional LMS´s are better
prepared for insertion of study
materials and various amedments
Individualised management
Administration and assessmenet
systems are not included
Compatibility with Uni IT systems is
missing
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
Human aspects
 The motivation of people to study is changing in time
 The rules for study make study more comfortable
 Decission making in the situation, where is lack of
information or knowledge is complicated
 Creation of own study path needs personality
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
The light at the end of tunel
 Adaptation of Social Networks
for the purposes of teaching
 Administration
 Assessment
 Compatibility
 Time management
 Study guide
 Teacher´s toolbook
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
Conditions for Social Networks application
 Adopted system
 Well trained staff
 On the beginning
 In the process
 In evaluation and assessment
 Communication management
 New approaches to education
delivelivery
IADIS International Conference e-Learning 2013
Second and final conclusions
 Social Neworks are viable alternative




for LMS
Social Neworks could be suitable more
for LLL than for graduated courses
Social networks could be more popular
than more formal ways of training
Social networks brings innovation into
the course production
Social networks are challenging
alternative to other forms of education
distribution
