Is There a Life After Speech?
Carole Janow
Is there life after speech?
Sometimes late at night
In the silence of my room
I think not
The world is made up of words
Words I cannot utter
Words that no-one understands
Conversations only to myself
How can I live without them
It’s like being sentenced to die
Everyday is a struggle no one knows
A loneliness only I can feel
For without speech I am disconnected and apart

Creating a Communication System
‘The purpose of a communication display is
to arrange language in space so individuals
can,...say what they wish to say as quickly
as possible, and can do so with a minimal
amount of effort’
(Blackstone 1993).
A “word on a communication aid is
NOT just a word. It is a STRATEGY
to make another person guess a
word”
(von Tetzchner taken from Blackstone 1992)
