Transcript Communication and Media - Anglican Network in Canada

Communication:
Working with media
Understanding media
• We need media to communicate our
story
• Reporters are professionals with a job to
do – get a good story
• On tight deadlines
• Generally try to report both sides (fair,
balanced)
Media spokespersons
• Only authorized spokespersons can speak
on behalf of the Network
• Churches should select and authorize
spokespersons to speak on behalf of the
congregation
• Well-informed, well-spoken, gracious, and savvy
• Everyone should know who the spokespersons
are
Preparing for an interview
• If call is unexpected, arrange a call back time
• Know what you want to achieve; focus on
your audience
• List your 1-3 talking points
• Think through possible questions
• Relax. Adjust your attitude. See opportunity.
• Muster prayer support
• Create a quiet, uncluttered interview “space”
Ground rules
• Everything said to a reporter is “on the
record”
• Don’t say “no comment”; If you can’t
comment, explain why
• Never say anything you don’t want to see in the
newspaper or hear on TV or on the radio
• Don’t repeat negative questions
• Don’t use loaded words
• Don’t allow words to be put in your mouth
