Background Story of Poem
Cao Zhi was a prince who hated seeing his
people fight each other in the civil war. To
express his anger, he wrote this poem to let
the people know that they all come from the
same place. He wanted to tell them they
shouldn’t be fighting and should find peace with
each other.
English Translation
Boil bean burn bean stalk
Bean in pan in cry
Actually from same root grow
Mutual boil why so fast Boiling beans burns the
beanstalk,
Beans inside the pan cry:
We're both grown from one root,
Why so fast to boil each other?

