Geography
• Rivers, mountains, and deserts helped shape China’s
civilization.
• The Huang He (Yellow River) and Chang Jiang River
(Yangtze River) provided rich soil for farming.
• The Himalaya, Kunlun Shan, Tian Shan, Altun, and Altay
Mountains provided protection from enemies.
• The Gobi Desert is cold and rocky that also provides
separation from other people.
Zhou Dynasty
• The Zhou dynasty ruled for more than 8oo
years.
• According to Zhou rulers, a heavenly law
gave the kings the power to rule.
• The Chinese developed an irrigation and
flood control systems.

• The early Chinese society had three main social classes.
 Landowning aristocrats
 Peasant farmers
 merchants
• Chinese families practiced filial piety, children had to
respect their parents and older relatives.
• Men grew crops, went to school and ran the government.
Women raised the children and saw to their education.
Confucianism

Chinese thinker and teacher.
He traveled through China
to persuade government
leaders to follow his ideas.
• He believed that people
should put the needs of their
family and community first.
• “Do unto others as you
would have others do unto
you.”
Daoism
• Laozi, or the Old Master
also promoted a
peaceful society.
• People should give up
worldly desires in favor
of nature and the Dao.
• Daoism is the opposite
of Confucianism.
Daoism told people to
give up their concerns
about the world. One
should seek inner peace
and live in harmony with
nature.

Legalism 法家
Hanfeizi 韓非
• Developed the teaching of
Legalism during the 200s B.C.
• Society needs a system of
harsh laws and strict
punishment.
• Many aristocrats liked
Legalism because it favored
force and punishment.
Qin Dynasty
• Qin Shihuangdi ruled according to
Legalism. Anyone who opposed him
was punished or killed.
• The Qin ruler made changes in the
government that would last for 2,000
years.
• Qin built the Great Wall of China to
keep enemies out. He had farmers
leave their homes and help build it.
Silk Road
• During the Han Dynasty, the Silk Road was
used to transport goods as far as Greece and
Rome.
• The Silk Road is 4000 miles from western
China to Southwest Asia.
• Silk was the most valuable trade product.
