During the late Song Dynasty attacks became
more frequent.
1220’s nomadic people called the Mongols
came from Central Asia
They would create the largest land empire in
history and conquer China.







Powerful nomadic people
Central Asian steppes
Herded sheep & goats
Skilled horsemen
Used to living in harsh
environments
Used to competing for
scarce resources
Tough people


Mongols were
divided into separate
clans led by a khan or
chief
1206 a powerful khan
named Temujin
conquered his rivals
to unite the Mongol
clans
•He became known as
Genghis Khan “universal
ruler”
•Goal: build an empire
•Organized Mongols into a
military machine
•Cunning military leader,
excellent battle tactics
•Used brutality &
psychological warfare
Although brutal in building their empire, the
Mongols ruled it peacefully.
 They tolerated local beliefs and ways of life.
 They often “assimilated” into the cultures they
conquered. This integration of diverse cultures
gave peace to the Empire called
Pax Mongolia= “Mongol Peace”

