secede or leave the United States on December 20, 1860.
• Mississippi is the 2nd state to secede on January 9, 1861.
• Florida, Alabama Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas,
Tennessee, North Carolina all join before the summer of 1861.
• First shots of the Civil War fired April 1861 in Fort Sumter in Charleston,
South Carolina, when Southern forces attacked the US fort.
