History
The Armed Forces E-9 Association
The idea of organizing a group of retired Sergeants Majors in the Killeen, TX.
Area dates back to December 1977 when old-line retirees got together for social
evening and formal dinners. The actual genesis of the current organization dates to the
summer of 1983. On 3 December 1983 more than one hundred retired E9’s reviewed,
amended and subsequently adopted a formal Constitution and By-Laws. The Retired
Sergeants major Association INC., became a reality.
The Secretary, State of Texas, signed a Certificate of Incorporation on 1 March
1984 that recognized The Retired Sergeants Major Association (TRSMA) as a non-profit
corporation under the Texas Non-Profit Act. The Association now numbers over 1,500
with active chapter is six states and more in the formation stage. Counting all members
at large, members cover 43 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Europe and
the Far East.
The first Chapter was formed in June 1985 at Lawton, OK followed by chartering
Chapters in Junction City KS in May 1987; Killeen TX, January 1988; Empire State
(NY), July 1989; Horsham PA, January 1991; Colorado Springs CO, June 1993;
Fayetteville NC, September 1994; a second chapter in Killeen TX, April 1995;
Washington State, June 1995; Kentucky Chapter May 1996 and Hawaii, November
1996. The first Retired Sergeants Major and Chiefs Association Auxiliary was formed
and held it’s first meeting in August 1984. The Kansas Sunflower Auxiliary Chapter was
chartered in June 1996.
At the 1994 Annual Membership Roundup in Colorado Springs a revised
Constitution and By-Laws was adopted which officially established a National
Convention to be held in May of each year. The first Convention was held in Junction
City in 1995 followed by Ft Bragg, 1996; King of Prussia PA, 1997; Killeen TX, 1998;
Fife WA, 1999; Ft Know KY 2000; Junction City KS, 2001; Peterson AAFB CO, 2002;
Killeen TX 2003 and Philadelphia PA 2004. Charleston SC will host the 2005
Convention on 22 April – 1 May at the Radisson Hotel, Charleston Airport. Our local
chapter will host the 2010 Convention in Junction city.
At the 2005 Convention, the Association changed its official name to the ARMED
FORCES E9 ASSOCIATION to better reflect all branches of E9’s.
