leader of what has been
called the “rocket
team”, which developed
the V-2 ballistic missile
for the Nazis during
WWII
NASA
• In 1958 President Dwight
Eisenhower Signed a public
order creating the National
Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA), a
federal agency dedicated
to space exploration
Later two national security programs
were created:
• The first, led by U.S. Air Force, dedicated itself
to exploiting the military potential of space
• The second, led by CIA, known as Corona,
used orbiting satellites to gather intelligence
on the Soviet Union

Corona Project
May 5th, 1961 astronaut Alan Shephard
became the first American in space (though
not in orbit)
The Big Promise
Later that May, President John F. Kennedy
promised American nation that by the end of
the decade the United States would land a
man on the moon…
John F. Kennedy's Speech
In February of 1962 John Glenn became
the first American to orbit the Earth
Apollo 8
December 21, 1968 saw the launch of
Apollo 8, the first manned space mission
to orbit the moon
And just after 147 hours, 0 minutes, 42
seconds, Apollo 8 successfully returned
back to Earth
Apollo 11
• July 16, 1969, U.S. astronauts Neil Armstrong,
Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins set off on the
Apollo 11 space mission, and became the first
team of astronauts to land on the moon
“One small step for men, one giant leap for mankind”
-Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon
Lets Review!

Russia
• On October 4, 1957, a Soviet R-7
intercontinental ballistic missile launched
Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite and
the first man made object to be placed into
the Earth’s orbit
Sputnik (stands for Traveler)
Competition is heating up
• Sputnik’s launch came as a surprise to
America
• In the United States space was seen as the
next frontier, and was crucial not to lose too
much ground to the Soviets

In 1959, the Soviet space program took
another step forward with the launch of Luna
2, the first space probe to hit the moon
The first man to orbit Earth
Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the
first person to orbit the Earth, traveling in the
capsule-like spacecraft Vostok 1 in April of
1961
Yuri Gagarin
Yuri Gagarin was a
soviet pilot and
cosmonaut; he was the
first human to travel
into outer space and
completed an orbit of
the Earth in 1961
Gherman Titov
Titov, the second man to
orbit the earth was the
first man to take a picture
and film from space.
Gagarin did not take a
camera with him on the
first spaceflight, so Titov
was the first photographer
and first cinematographer
of the cosmos.
The first woman in space
In 1963 cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova
becomes the first woman in space
Venus 3
• In 1965 Venus
3 was
launched by
the Soviets
• It became the
first man made
object to
impact Venus
on March 1,
1966
Tragic accident
• In January of 1966 chief engineer of Soviet
space program Sergey Korolyov dies, thus
putting Soviet Union a step behind in the Race
