Brief History of the Democrats
• Thomas Jefferson founded the
Democratic-Republican Party in 1792
• In 1800, Thomas Jefferson was elected
as the first Democratic President of the
United States
• James Monroe was elected president in
1816 and led the nation through a time
known as ”The Era of Good Feeling”

• In 1844 they changed their name to the
Democratic party.
• The Democratic Party embraced the
immigrants who flooded into cities and
industrial centers, built a political base
by bringing them into the American
mainstream, and helped create the
most powerful economic engine in
history

In 1912, Woodrow Wilson became the first
Democratic president of the 20th cenury
A generation later Roosevelt was elected
president
In 1960’s, President John F. Kennedy dared
Americans to put a man on the moon,
created the Peace Corps, and negotiated a
treaty banning atmospheric testing of
nuclear weapons
Lyndon Johnson followed Kennedy’s lead
and worked to pass the Civil Rights Act and
Voting Rights Act.

Kennedy and Johnson worked together to end the
practice of segregation in many southern states.
In 1976, Jimmy Carter was elected president
In 1992, Bill Clinton was elected the 42nd President
of the United States
Clinton ran on the promise of a new agreement for
America’s working families.
The Clinton Administration was responsible for
reducing unemployment to its lowest level in
decades and responsible for economic expansion
In 2000, Al Gore won the vote for President by more
than 500,000 votes, but was not elected president
The Democratic Party believes in:
