World War I
• World War I began in Europe on August 1,
1914. The war started when Archduke
Franz Ferdinand of Austria was
assassinated by a Serbian student Gavrilo
Princip. The United States would not enter
the War until America was forced to
defend itself.

• What words do I need to know?
– Neutral- not choosing sides.
– Propaganda- information (news, TV, etc.) that
promotes one position on an issue.
– Armistice- an agreement to stop fighting.
– Allies- the good guys (France, Great Britain,
Russia, USA
– Central Powers- the bad guys (Germany,
Austria-Hungary)

• 1915: German submarine sank passenger
ship Lusitania killing 128 Americans
• 1917: German sub attacks began to sink
U.S. passenger ships
• Zimmerman telegram: Germany promised
Mexico land if they would fight in World War
I and attack the United States.
How Georgia helps during
World War I
• Nearly 100,000 Georgians volunteered to
fight in World War I
• Soldiers from around the U.S.
volunteered and were trained in Georgia
military bases, Camp Benning, Fort
McPherson, and Camp Gordon.
• Georgians contributed manufactured
goods and farm produce
• 3,000 young Georgians killed in the war

11, 1918
