The United States looked to settle the land in the
west though it was occupied by other people

John O’Sullivan said it was Manifest Destiny for the
United States to stretch from the Atlantic to the
Pacific Ocean

When James K. Polk Became President in 1844
manifest destiny would become US Political Policy

In looking to complete Manifest Destiny, Polk
looked to take over all of the Oregon Territory
from Great Britain

The United States would set the Boundary of
Canada at the 49th parallel and control the
territory to the south of the line
This Means War!!

While avoiding war in Oregon War with Mexico was brewing
over the territory of Texas

The Southern Border in Mexico was split by 100 miles and
thousands of miles were at stake in finding an agreement

Looking to settle the dispute peacefully, Polk sent John
Slidell to offer 25 million dollars to Mexico for California,
Texas, and New Mexico

When Mexico disagreed Polk sent Zachary Taylor to the Rio
Grande and Mexico sent soldiers to ambush the US troops
killing or wounding 16 troops
Civil War Foreshadowing

When News of the Attack made it to Washington, congress
would declare war on Mexico

The war would split the United states with Abraham Lincoln
from Illinois and The Northeast and west Questioning the war

The South looked at Mexican Territory as a way to increase the
Slave States

Frederick Douglass would try to spread the abolition movement
to Mexican Lands

The war in Mexico would begin in May 1846 with many
Americans thinking it would be a quick and easy war

General Stephen Kearny would be sent to occupy New Mexico
as war spread across the Santa Fe Trail

Kearny would take New Mexico without firing a bullet and
moved to a lesser populated California

During the Bear Flag Revolt John C. Fremont would Arrest
the Mexican Commander in the North and Declare California
a part of the United States

US Forces would reach California in the Fall and control the
entire state

American Forces would invade Mexico from Two Directions
and General Taylor met General Santa Anna at Buena Vista
in the North

After Two Bloody Days of Fighting Santa Anna would retreat
ending the war in the North

In the South, Troops led by General Winfield Scott would
reach Mexico City at the castle of Chapultepec

Though Resistance was fierce Mexico City would Fall to Scott
in September 1847
Vacation Spots

Under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo the Border of
Texas was set at The Rio Grande River

The United States also received Mexican Cession
including California, Nevada, Utah, Most of Arizona,
New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming

One Half of Mexico would be Lost and Mexico felt
the United States had provoked the war to take the
land

The US would pay Mexico 15 Million Dollars and pay the 3.25
million dollars in claims US Citizens had in the region

The United States also agreed to Protect the 80,000 Mexicans
in the Region

Mexican Settlers were now a Minority and were out of place
in the new Country

The Mexican Settlers would teach the US how to develop the
land for farming, ranching and mining creating a new
blended Southwestern Culture


