Transcript Mapping Manifest Destiny

How did America complete its Manifest Destiny?
Prologue: During the early 19th century the United States saw rapid expansion in
technological advancements, industrial capacity, immigration, urban population and an
increasing dependency on cotton. The upsurge in nationalism fostered by writers and
artistic depictions of plush lands enhanced the belief that the continent was destined to
belong to the United States. This rapid growth was met with two financial panics in 1819
and 1837. While demands of the nation to expand its borders westward increased, the
sectional struggle for political and economic power bridled with the debate over slavery’s
expansion stifled the pace with which the nation conquered the continent. However, as
opportunists and families moved west it was only a matter of time before the nation’s
leaders would have to act on expansion. While the Election of 1840 had avoided the issue
of expansion the Election of 1844 was centered on the issue of Manifest Destiny.
Problem: The Children’s Historical Society wishes to build a tutorial program that
introduces to kids how the United States came to own the North American Continent in
its exhibit called “America’s Manifest Destiny”. The tutorial should help kids understand
that America grew over time and had to overcome many struggles to achieve its ultimate
goal of spreading from Sea to Shining Sea.
Task: Your educational promotions firm has been contracted to design a power
point tutorial that shows the growth of the nation in story book and mapping
format
• Build in power point a story map that shows the growth of the US and
provided information as to who, what, where, when, why and the US
acquired the lands.
• You must build off of the next slide-include the growth of the
following territories- Texas, Oregon, Mexican Cession, Gadsden
Purchase.
• For each map you must provide a summary of how the US acquired
the new possession.
Directions for producing final product
• 1. Using the next slide you will duplicate slide.
• 2. Then you must trace the new territory using shapes.
• 3. Make sure the color painted in is different from the previous
territory. Texas, Oregon, Mexican Cession, Gadsden Purchase.
• 4. On the next slide you will write a summary of how the US acquired
the new possession. Make sure you provided information as to who,
what, where, when, why and the US acquired the lands.
• 5. Follow the same procedure to complete the assignment for the
four regions.
• 6. email you final product to Mr. Walker

America in 1840
America in 1840.
• By 1840 the United States had acquired about half of the North American
Continent. Following the American Revolution in the Treaty of Paris 1783 the US
gained the lands west of the Appalachians to the Mississippi River. In 1803
President Jefferson acquired the area know the Louisiana Purchase from France
for 15 million dollars. This purchase double the size of the US by extending US
land rights from the Mississippi River to the through the upper Midwest to the
northern Rocky Mountains. Following expeditions of Lewis and Clark and
Zebulon Pike, Americans began to migrate west into the territory. After Andrew
Jackson invaded Florida in 1819 the US gained Florida from Spain with signing of
the Adams-Onis Treaty. By 1825 The Monroe Doctrine and westward migrations
of Americans laid the ground work for the completion of Manifest Destiny from
Sea to Shining Sea.
