Human Respiration
Parts and Functions
Function:

The primary function of the respiratory
system is GAS EXCHANGE
– Taking in Oxygen
– Removing Carbon Dioxide

The actual conversion process of Cellular
Respiration takes place in the
mitochondria!
– Glucose + Oxygen
Carbon Dioxide + Water

Actual site of gas exchange
Muscle that pulls air into
lungs
Air tube surrounded by
cartilage
Where air comes in
Contain alveoli, able to fill
with air
Place where air is warmed
Where bronchi split into
smaller tubes
Where trachea splits, one
tube to each lung.
How do we breathe?
The diaphragm contracts and pulls down
 The negative pressure pulls air into mouth
and nose

How does this connect to
circulation?
Oxygen in air is picked up by small
capillaries around the alveoli
 Red blood cells actually carry the oxygen
 The blood travels to the heart and is
pumped to the body
 Blood from the body high in CO2 goes
back to the heart, pumped to lungs
 CO2 moves from the blood back into the
lungs and is exhaled!
