Organ Systems
Levels of Organization
• Cells, tissues, organs, organ systems,
organisms
Cells
• Your Body is made up of trillions of cells that
carry on processes to keep organisms alive.
Organs
• In some ways, the skin is the body’s largest
organ.
Organ Systems
• Your body has 11 organ systems:
1) Integumentary system
2) Skeletal system
3) Muscular system
4) Circulatory system
5) Respiratory system
6) Digestive system
7) Excretory system
8) Immune system
9) Reproductive system
10) Nervous system
11) Endocrine system
• Today I will provide you with short
descriptions of each system
• But within this unit, we will cover some of the
body systems in a little detail, and some of the
systems in A LOT of detail!!
INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM:
SKELETAL SYSTEM:
• Skin, hair, nails provide
protection
• Bones and connective tissue
give body support and
structure
MUSCULAR SYSTEM:
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM:
• Most muscles work to move
your body by pulling on
your skeleton
• Powered by the heart,
works to carry food and
oxygen to all cells in body
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:
• Responsible for breathing
• Breaks down food so your
body can use it for energy
EXCRETORY SYSTEM:
IMMUNE SYSTEM:
• Removes wastes from
blood, eventually as urine
• Protection from bacteria
and viruses
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM:
NERVOUS SYSTEM:
• Produce sex cells
• Processes info and allows
body to respond
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM:
• Release hormones to help
body regulate activities
Homeostasis
• All the systems in your body work together to
maintain homeostasis
• Homeostasis is how your body maintains an
internal balance with the outside environment
• For example, whether it is snowing outside or
burning hot, if you take your temperature, it
will still be around 37 degrees celcius
