•
The respiratory system helps us to bring oxygen into our
bodies, which we need for our cells to live and function
properly.
•
Also it helps us get rid of carbon dioxide, which is a waste
product of cellular function.
•
Breathing consists of two phases, inspiration and expiration
• Inspiration- the process of taking in air
• Expiration- the process of blowing out air
Pharynx (throat): a
short tube - common
passageway for air,
food, and liquid
Larynx (voice box): a
tube, joining the
pharynx with the
trachea production of
sound
Nasal Cavity: a large
air filled space that
filters, warms, and
moistens air
Trachea (windpipe):
transports air to and
from lungs; main airway.
Lungs: primary organs of respiration – oxygen
comes in and carbon dioxide is removed.
Alveoli: The tiny bag-like structure where
oxygen passes from the air into the blood.
Bronchi: branching airways
Diaphragm: skeletal muscle of
respiration
3)The trachea splits into
two branches called
bronchi, each taking air to
one lung.
4) The bronchi divide into
smaller branches, called the
bronchioles.

where exchange of
gases takes place in.

6) When the diaphragm
goes up, lungs contract
and we breathe out.

the nostrils and leads
into the nasal cavity. Then it
joins with the pharynx.
Gas Exchange
o Gas exchange of oxygen and carbon
dioxide takes place in the alveoli,
which is the functional respiratory
units in the lung.
o Oxygen from the inhaled air goes
through the walls of the alveoli. It is
then carried by the blood to the body
tissues.
o The blood then picks up the carbon
dioxide produced by the cells.
There are many ways to maintain healthy respiratory
system.
• Maintain a healthy weight by eating diet rich nutrients
• Challenge your lungs to improve your respiratory
system by excising regularly
• Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water
• Avoid smoking or even avoid being near a person
smoking
Asthma
D: severe allergic reaction that makes your lungs very
sensitive and hard to breathe
T: go see your doctor and use medication as directed
Bronchitis
Emphysema
D: inflammation of the lining of the bronchioles
T: use medication as directed/surgery/vaccinations
D:damages the alveoli in your lungs, making hard for a
person to breathe
T: quit smoking, use medication as directed
Pneumonia
D: the alveoli becomes filled with fluid, preventing the
exchange of gases
T: antibiotic therapy
Lung cancer
D: irregular & uncontrolled growth of cancer cells in
the lung tissue
T: radiation & chemotherapy
• Hold breath underwater
record
- The longest time holding
the breath underwater
was 22 min 00 sec by Stig
Severinsen (Denmark) at
the London School of
Diving in 2012.

• Did You Know That…
- It is healthier to breathe through your nose than your mouth, because
your nose has little hairs ,cilia, which filters the air you breathe in.
- The surface area of the lungs is roughly
the same size as a tennis court.
- Lungs are the only human organ that can float in water because each of
your lung contains about 300 million balloon-like structures, alveoli.
When these structures are filled with air, they make lungs float.
• Have you ever wondered…
What Causes Hiccups?
Hiccups are the sudden movements of the diaphragm.
Why Do I Yawn?
Yawning is result of your body not taking in enough oxygen from the air.
