Transcript Respiratory System

Respiratory System: body system that brings oxygen from
the air into the body for delivery via the blood to cells.
Once delivered, it picks up carbon dioxide and carries it
back to lungs to be expelled into the air.
Respiration: diffusion of gases between the atmosphere
and cells of the body.
Ventilation: the intake of fresh air
Air enters and exits the body through the nose. The nose
consists of the nostrils or nares.
Air passes from the nose through the nasal cavity.
The respiratory system is lined with mucous membrane,
which secretes mucus. Mucus helps to moisten, warm and
filter the air to remove debris .
Pharynx: air passes through the nasal cavity to the
pharynx. Commonly called the throat. Passageway fro the
upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts.
Larynx: part of respiratory tract located between the
pharynx and trachea. Commonly called the voice box.
The Lower Respiratory Tract: consists of the trachea,
bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli.
Trachea: commonly called the wind pipe. Extends
from the neck to the chest. Trachea attaches to the larynx
in the neck and passes into the thorax, or chest cavity. The
trachea is lined with cilia, which help filter debris.
Bronchi: two divisions of the trachea which lead to a
separate lung and continues to divide.
Bronchioles: branches of the bronchi
Alveoli: air sacs in which most of the gas exchange occurs.
Small, grape-like clusters at the end of each bronchiole. This
is where gas exchange occurs. Oxygen diffuses into the
blood. Carbon dioxide diffuses into the alveoli.
Thoracic Cavity: contained in the ribs.
