WHAT TOBACCO DOES TO THE BODY
Tobacco has harmful effects on nearly every body system
EFFECTS ON THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Short Term Effects



Nicotine changes the brain
chemistry causing addiction
Withdrawal symptoms
occur as early as 30 minutes
from the last cigarette
Because of the change in
brain chemistry adrenaline
is released increasing heart
rate and blood pressure
Long Term Effects

Reduces the flow of
oxygen to the brain,
increasing the chances of
a stroke
EFFECTS ON THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
Short Term Effects
Constricts (narrows)
blood vessels reducing
oxygen supply to body
tissue
 Increases the heart rate

Long Term Effects
Causes fatty buildup that
clogs blood vessels
 Reduced oxygen flow
may damage the heart
increasing the likelihood
of heart disease

EFFECTS ON THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Short Term Effects

Shortness of breath

Affecting the ability to
walk, run, climb bicycle
and so on.
Long Term Effects
Tar leaves a sticky residue
that destroys the cilia,
the tiny hair like
projections that line the
airway
 Damages the alveoli, the
tiny air sacs in the lungs
which then causes
emphysema

EFFECTS ON THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Long Term Effects
Upset
stomach
 Bad breath
 Stained teeth
 Dulls the
taste buds
 Increase
chance of
cavities


Cancers of the

Bladder cancer
EFFECTS OF SMOKE ON THE NONSMOKER
 Passive
smoke is the
cigarette, cigar, or pipe
smoke inhaled by a
non-smoker
 It is also the smoke
inhaled that remains in
a closed environment
after the smoker is
finished smoking.
 A non-smoker could
inhale enough nicotine
and carbon monoxide
in an hour to have the
same effect of smoking
a whole cigarette.
WHAT IS SECONDHAND SMOKE?

Secondhand Smoke
Causes eye

headaches and
coughing
 Frequent ear
infections, asthma
and other
respiratory
problems
 Cause lung cancer

SMOKING DURING AND AFTER
PREGNANCY

Mothers who smoke
contribute to the deaths of
6,200 children every year.
2,800 low birth weight
 1,100 have respiratory infections





Increased chance of
premature birth or still birth.
Decreased intellectual
development
Decreases the oxygen levels
to the blood in both the
fetus and the mother
Nicotine is transferred to
infant during breast feeding
RIGHTS OF NON-SMOKERS

Nearly half of all
smokers light up
without asking those
around them.



80% of non-smokers are
bothered by it but do
not ask them to stop
You have a right to
express yourself and
ask them to stop!
All restaurants in
Georgia are nonsmoking!
