Levels of Organization
Cells Unit
7th Grade Science
Levels of Organization
• 1st : Cells—the basic unit of living things
• 2nd: tissues—made of many cells that work
•
•
•
together
3rd: organs—made of tissues that work together.
4th: organ system—made of organs that work
together
5th: organism= made of organ systems that
work together; an entire living thing
A cell, tissue, organ, system, or
organism?
Where is it found? What
does it do?
 Found: the circulatory system is one of
many systems in the human body, as well
as in many other organisms. It is made
up of the heart and blood vessels.
 Function: the circulatory system
transports oxygen and food to all cells in
the body through the blood
A cell, tissue, organ, system, or
organism?
Where is it found? What
does it do?
 Found: the stomach is part of the
digestive system in many animals
 Function: to break down food, and store it
to later be absorbed by the intestines into
the blood
Cells, tissues, organs, organ systems,
or organisms?
Where are they found?
What do they do?
 Found: these are various tissues found inside
the human body
-epithelial tissue (skin, inside of cheek, etc.)
-nervous tissue (brain and nerves)
-muscle tissue
-connective tissue (tendons)
 Function: each tissue has its own function,
what do you think they are?
Cells, tissues, organs, systems, or
organisms?
Where are they found?
What do they do?
 Found: these are different types of red
and white blood cells found in our blood
-what level is our blood?
 Function: red blood cells transport
oxygen to other cells and organs, and
white blood cells fight off diseases
A cell, tissue, organ, system, or
organism?
Where is it found? What
does it do?
 Found: in China
 Function: to live and survive in the wild
A cell, tissue, organ, system, or
organism?
Where is it found? What
does it do?
 Found: in our brain, our nervous tissue is
made up of millions of these cells
 Function: neurons transmit signals to
body parts to tell them what to do
A cell, tissue, organ, system, or
organism?
Where is it found? What
does it do?
 Found: muscles are organs found all over
our bodies
 Function: they help us to move, pump
blood, and support our skeleton
A cell, tissue, organ, system, or
organism?
Where is it found? What
does it do?
 Found: paramecium are one-celled
organisms that are often found in pond
water
 Function: to live and survive in their
environment
A cell, tissue, organ, system, or
organism?
Where is it found? What
does it do?
 Found: the brain is an organ in our
nervous system
 Function: sends and receives signals
throughout the body
