Circulatory System- Part 1
•Heart Structure & Function
The Heart
• 4 chambers
• 2 upper, thin walled atria
• 2 lower, thick, muscular-walled
ventricles which pump blood
Heart Tissue
• Pericardium, thick, membranous sac that secretes
lubricating liquid
• Myocardium- cardiac muscle tissue
• Endocardium- connective and endothelial tissue
Heart Septum
• Septum-separates the left and right ventricles
• Why???
Heart Valves x 4
• Direct the flow of blood and prevent back
movement
• 2 are between atria/ ventriclesatrioventricular valves
– Supported by chordae tendineae (prevents
valves from inverting
– Right AV valve = tricuspid valve (3 flaps)
– Left AV valve = bicuspid or mitral valve (2
flaps)
Heart Valves x 4
• 2 are between ventricles and blood
vessels- semilunar valve
– Resemble half moons
– Pulmonary semilunar- between right
ventricle and pulmonary trunk
– Aortic semilunar- between left ventricle and
aorta
Blood Passage
• Vena cava carry O2poor blood from
body to right atrium
• Right atrium sends
blood though
tricuspid valve and
out the pulmonary
truck (pulmonary
arteries) to lungs
Blood Passage
• Pulmonary veins carry
O2-rich blood from
lungs into left atrium
• Left atrium sends blood
through bicuspid (mitral)
valve to left ventricle
• Left ventrical sends
blood through aortic
semilunar valve into
aorta to body
