8B Who needs energy anyway?
We all need energy to do anything.
We also need energy to make things like new body
cells, or hair.
What do you use most of your energy to do?

8C Who needs the most energy?
Sort these 25-year-old women into an order based
on the amount of energy they need every day.
Make a list starting with the one needing the most
energy.

8B Blood cells
Red blood cells carry oxygen. They
are packed full of a chemical called
haemoglobin.
There’s no nucleus!
White blood cells fight
infection. There are a few
different types of white
blood cells.
Platelets - they help the blood to
clot.
Plasma - the yellowish liquid that all of the cells float around in.
It contains lots of dissolved substances to keep cells healthy.

8b So what are the lungs for?
The lungs have two jobs:
1 to collect oxygen from the air
2 to deliver carbon dioxide to the air
This means that they need
1 a large surface area for this swapping of gases to
take place
2 ways to prevent the surfaces being clogged up
with dust from the air
3 a good blood supply and circulatory system to
move things around the body.
How many times do you breathe in a minute?

8B Respiration is the same as breathing? No?
Breathing is the movement of air in and out of the
lungs.
You can see people breathing and it’s one of the first
things a doctor looks for to see if someone is alive.
Respiration is a chemical reaction going on inside
all living cells.
It releases energy from glucose to keep the body
alive.
