 VOLUNTARY CONTROL over
INVOLUNTARY SYSTEMS
 As we will see, mind-body interaction
WHAT IS A “HOT

A person who SEEMS to
overreact to stressors/life
situations.

DISEASE/CONDITION?
PSYCHOSOMATIC OR
PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGICAL
 Conditions/Illnesses/Diseases that have a mind
AND body component
 Psychogenic (ex. Asthma) and Somatogenic
(ex. Cancer, Arthritis)
 KEY TO THIS CHAPTER!!!
 Mind – Body Interaction
MIND-BODY CONNECTION
 It is not possible to separate the body from the
mind
 What one experiences has a profound impact
on the other (examples: starting to feel sick…,
injury, pain tolerance)
 Possible to enhance immune system
functioning by becoming…
“PERSONALITY”
DISEASES

is:
 A CANCER-PRONE Personality –
unassertive, overly patient, avoids
conflict, fails to express neg. emotions
 A HEART DISEASE-PRONE Personalityangry, hostile, aggressive
 Hypertension => Stroke and/or Heart
Disease
 Ulcers
 Migraine/Tension Headaches/Backaches
 Cancer
 Allergies, Asthma, etc.
 Arthritis
 And Temperomandibular Syndrome
CONNECTIONS
 Stress => Breakdown of Immune Response
(vitamins, etc.) => Disease/Illness
 Conflicting research regarding whether or not
stress “causes” disease/illness (genetics,
substance use, carcinogens, etc.)
 The extent is unclear, but in every example…
TREATMENT/INTERVENT.
 STRESS RELIEF AND MANAGEMENT
PLAY A ROLE IN TREATMENT/CURE
 WHY NOT IMPLEMENT STRESS
RELIEF/MANAGEMENT AS
PREVENTION?!?!
What to be familiar with:
 Have a general understanding of the
terms & diseases mentioned today
 DON’T HAVE TO KNOW which type of
cells do what, etc., etc.
 MIND – BODY CONNECTION!!! (ex:
meditation,spirituality,athletics, etc.)
ACTIVITY/DISCUSSION
 Think of a time when your mind and body
made a connection and share it.
