Aim: How does our immune
system protect our body?
Do Now: What are ways you can prevent
from getting sick?
Wash your hands, cover your mouth and nose
when you cough and sneeze, clean cuts before
applying bandage, eat a balanced diet, take a
multi-vitamin, use protection
What causes disease?
An organism that causes an infection or
disease is called a pathogen
Types of pathogens include VIRUS,
BACTERIA, FUNGUS, PROTOZOA
How does your body know that these
pathogens are harmful???
• Every organism’s cells have antigens
• They act like name tags
• Antigens have their own unique/specific
shape
• Allows your body to recognize things that
don’t belong to or in you
Pathogens have proteins on their cell membrane, and
these proteins have unique shapes.

Produced by white blood cells to recognize pathogen that
you’ve already been exposed to so you don't get sick from the
same pathogen again
