ManagemenT:
Motivation
Motivational theorist in
Management
Motivation describes the factors that initiate and
direct behavior.
Motivated employees are more likely to be
productive than nonmotivated workers.
This is one reason that motivation is an
important aspect of enhancing employee
performance.
Historically motivational theories were
concerned with three things:
1. What mobilizes or energizes human behavior
2. What directs behavior toward the
accomplishment of some objective
3. How such behavior is sustained over time
It is used depends on their ability to
explain motivation adequately
Predict with some degree of accuracy what
people actually do and lastly
Suggest practical ways of influencing
employees to accomplish organizational
objectives
MT can be classified into at least 2 distinct group:
Content Theorists
Process Theorists

Motivational theories that emphasize individual
needs or the rewards that may satisfy those
needs

Maslow theory:
Application to managing in nursing.
The nurse manager is responsible
for
• Understanding motivating factors for
employees and how motivation affects job
performance
• Using motivational techniques to enhance
employee performance
• Utilizing creative techniques to motivate staff
when traditional rewards such as pay or
benefit increases are unavailable and
• Empowering staff to use creativity to enhance
job performance.
