Transcript Radical Republicans` Reconstruction Plan

DO NOW:
Think of a time when you did
something “wrong” and were
punished for it.
Describe the incident and whether
you felt the “punishment fit the
crime”.
If you feel the punishment was unfair,
what would have been a fairer
punishment? Be honest!
1865-1877
 Civil
War ends in April 1865…
The Union won!! Now they
must put the country back
together!!
 President Lincoln was
assassinated by John Wilkes
Booth in a theatre in 1865.
Lincoln did not live to see his
plans for a RE-United States
follow through!
 Vice
President Andrew
Johnson becomes President.
 In order to reunite the
Confederate and Union
States, Johnson announces a
plan of RECONSTRUCTION.
This plan will restore the
Confederate states into the
Union.
 The
South was left
in ruins after the
Civil War
ECONOMICALLY
POLITICALLY
&
SOCIALLY
Specifically Speaking…
Homes,
cities, towns,
farms, & businesses were
destroyed and burned to
the ground
Total property wealth
dropped 66%
SOUTH BEFORE THE CIVIL
WAR:
Agriculture
Slave
(Cotton)
labor
Little Industry

How can we rebuild the South??
Create your OWN
Reconstruction Plan

would you hold the South to?
Write 4-5 sentences
DO NOW:
Share YOUR Reconstruction plan
from yesterday with your shoulder
partner.
Were you going to be FORGIVING
or NOT-SO-FORGIVING of the
South? Why or why not?
How might you “make them pay”??
Johnson’s Reconstruction Plan:
 PLAN
OF FORGIVENESS
 Johnson was a southerner
himself and wanted to treat
the South “fairly”
 Argued that Southern states
should NOT be denied their
rights
Johnson’s Reconstruction Plan:
 Restore the rights of White
Southerners who swore allegiance
to the Union and who repealled
secession
 Amend state constitutions to
abolish slavery
 Refuse to pay debts to
Confederate gov’t
Johnson’s Reconstruction Plan:
 Confederate
leaders are elected to
New State Governments
 Southern States Passed BLACK
CODES
 Laws
that were created to limit the
Freedom of the Freedmen (former
slaves), essentially keeping white
men in power in the south
WILL JOHNSON’S PLAN
WORK?
 Will Northerners support a
“forgiveness approach”?
 RADICAL REPUBLICANS
HAVE A DIFFERENT PLAN
IN MIND…
Radical Republicans’ Reconstruction
Plan:
 Passed
in 1867
 Wanted to PUNISH the South
 Put South under Military Control
 Anyone loyal to the Union could
vote
Radical Republicans’ Reconstruction
Plan:
 African
Americans guaranteed
suffrage (right to vote)
 South MUST ratify the 14th
Amendment
 Grants
citizenship to ALL African
Americans
Freedmen’s Bureau:
Groups of Northerners that
moved to the South to
provide food, education, and
medical care to former slaves
(freedmen) as well as whites
effected by the war.
Freedmen’s Bureau: Keeping the Peace
The Freedmen’s Bureau was
instrumental in registering
th
freedmen to vote once the 14
Amendment was passed.
 16
African Americans were
elected to Congress in the
South.
DO NOW
 Write
down examples of
BLACK CODES
 What was the reaction of
many Southerners to the
FREEDMEN’S BUREAU?
(What WAS the Freedmen’s
Bureau?)
RECONSTRUCTION AMENDMENTS:
 13th Amendment


14th Amendment


ABOLISHED SLAVERY
GRANTED CITIZENSHIP TO ALL
AFRICAN AMERICANS
15th Amendment

VOTERS SHALL NOT BE DENIED
BASED ON RACE, COLOR, OR
PREVIOUS CONDITION OF
SERVITUDE
While the FREEDMEN’S BUREAU
was a Northern Agency that set
out to HELP the Freedmen and
poor whites of the South, there
were some who took advantage
of the vulnerability of the
Southerners.
These people were known as
CARPETBAGGERS
CARPETBAGGERS:
 Northern Whites who moved
South after the war (CHEAP
LAND!)
 Viewed as crooks, scoundrels, and
looking to take advantage of
Southerners vulnerability
 Politicians looking to corrupt
Reconstruction Gov’t
How would
you describe
this man?
Carpetbaggers were not well
“liked” by Southerners.
Another group not well liked by
Southerners were those FROM
the South who SUPPORTED the
these Reconstruction plans.
These people were known as
SCALAWAGS
SCALAWAGS:
 Southerners who
SUPPORTED
Reconstruction
 Seen as “traitors” to the
South
Johnson vs. Radical Republicans
 RR
create the TENURE OF
OFFICE ACT which limits the
Presidents Power.
 Prohibiting the President from
firing an official without
Congress’ permission
 Johnson
FIRES his Secretary
of War – Stanton!

violating the Tenure of Office
Act but is NOT FOUND
GUILTY by ONE VOTE!
 President Johnson finishes his
term, followed by President
