LIEDER
Lieder are Romantic Songs
• ‘Lied’ is the German word for ‘song’ and
is pronounced LEED.
• Use ‘Lied’ when referring to one song,
‘Lieder’ is the plural (when referring to
more than one)
INSTRUMENTATION
• A ‘Lied’ is a romantic song for one singer
and a piano.
• The piano part is not just a backing, but
adds to the storytelling of the piece.
• Lieder were very popular in Europe
during the ROMANTIC period
• Romantic period was 1815-1910.
LYRICS
• The words of a ‘Lied’ are very important.
• They’re usually based on poems and tell
a story (often dramatic and full of
emotion).
• The music reflects the words, so it
changes to be sad, or scary depending on
the lyrics (a bit like film music).
STRUCTURE
• Some lieder are THROUGH-COMPOSED
• THROUGH-COMPOSED - music is
different in each verse
• Others have a STROPHIC structure
• STROPHIC - the verses all have the same
tune.
STRUCTURE
• In Lieder there are lots of MOTIFS
• MOTIFS – little bits of music which
represent an idea, character or place.
• These motifs are repeated throughout to
help you follow the story.
COMPOSERS
• SCHUBERT is the most well known
composer of Lieder.
• Other composers include Schumann,
Beethoven and Brahms.
• Most well known Lieder composers were
German or Austrian
