Agustin Lara & Manzanero
• Lara was a Mexican singer & composer whose
career spanned nearly 70 years
• Lara married Maria Felix in 1946 and composed
many songs for her
• Lara’s three passions were women, music and the
state of Veracruz
• Manzanero is a Mexican musician & composer of
Maya descent
• Considered Mexico’s best romantic composer
• His work has been performed by Frank Sinatra,
Tony Bennett, Jose Jose, Luis Miguel, etc.

• Worked
with a large team of
largely Mexican musicians and
producers
•Worked with outstanding Spanish
producers, composers, and
arrangers
• Jose Jose earned more than
200 Golden and Platinum
Records between 1970 & 1995
• He was popular because his
baladas were dramatic love songs
that addressed universal topics
such as the impermanence of
love, the sadness of lost love, &
the inability of living without the
loved one
Balada Grupera & Working Class
Sentimentality
• The balada style developed within the
grupero musical trend & speaks about
sensibilities & aspirations of the working
class
• Their instruments included electric guitars,
electric bass, drum set, and the electric
organ (later synthesizer)
• Music by low-income working-class
musicians for low-income working-class
people
Juan Gabriel (1950-)
• Early in his career he was portrayed as
a young, overly sensitive man. Today
he is the most successful Mexican
singer, songwriter, and producer
• Winner of Billboard, Grammy, Latin
Grammy, and MTV awards. Has over
1,500 Golden, Platinum, and MultiPlatinum Records
• Some of his hits include Siempre en mi
mente (Always on my Mind), Yo no naci
para amar (I was not born to love), and
Te sigo amando (I continue to love you)
Norteña Music
• Norteña music came to northern Mexico &
southern Texas in the late 19th century with
the Germans, Czechs, and Poles who settled
there
• Standard instrumentation includes the
button accordion, the double stringed bass
guitar, bass, drum set
• Tigres del Norte – the most popular &
successful norteña band
Los Tigres del Norte
• Founded by the Hernandez brothers and cousins from northwestern
state of Sinaloa, Mexico in 1968
• Some of their recent collaborations include Latin American artist such
as Juanes, Julieta Venegas, and Residente from Calle 13
• Their songs promote pride in the immigrants cultural background &
emphasize immigrants importance in the U.S. economy
Narcocorridos
• Narcocorridos genre chronicles the marginal,
dispossessed sectors of the population in
Mexico and the U.S. into the world of drug
dealing, its glamorized lifestyle, sometimes
condemning and sometimes justifying it and
its violent encounters with law enforcement
• A prominent musician of this genre was
Rosalino “Chalino” Sanchez (1960-1992)

Mexican Cumbia
• Cumbia in Mexico is as old as when this form
of music came about in Columbia where it
originates
• Several variations of Mexican cumbia:
northern cumbia (cumbia norteña), southern
cumbia, cumbia sonidera
• Sonidero DJ’s give this type of music an
interesting danceable sound, an artist who
has succeeded in this genre is Toy Selectah
Mexican Rock Music
• It originated in the 1950s with covers of
standard American rock songs
• “Mexican Woodstock” in the valley of
Avándaro in Mexico (1971)
• “El Chopo” Bazaar takes place every Saturday
morning in Mexico City
• 80s Mexican rock influenced by rock bands
from Spain
• Monterey Rock, Pop Rock, Indie Music
El Tri
One of the bands who played at Avandaro was
Three Souls in My Mind now known as El Tri
they were the only band that performed in that
music festival that moved forward and were
successful in Mexico
Fobia
Caifanes
Mana
The most successful bands of the Rock en tu Idioma (Rock in your Language)
period. All three are currently still making music and tour in Latin America
and the United States
Maldita Vecindad
This rock band formed in 1985, after the big earthquake in Mexico
City. They are considered pioneers in the Rock en Español
movement and continue to play in large venues in Mexico, Latin
America, and United States
Nortec Collective
Café Tacuba
These Mexican electronic/rock bands are an example of “mexicanidad” a
term we have covered this semester. They not only create a rock or
electronic sound but also add elements of Mexico’s regional sound into
their music

A few examples of the Indie Alternative bands of Mexico. All of them
sing in Spanish and English. They have collaborated with American
and European musicians/producers.
