Elements of Prejudice
► Stereotype
– "mental cookie cutters"-they force a simple pattern upon a
complex mass and assign a limited
number of characteristics to all
members of a group.
► Not
necessarily judgmental.
► Inaccurate.
► Resistant to change.
Discrimination - making choices about
how we treat other people.
► Unlawful:
► Not
sexual and racial discrimination;
unlawful: a coach who shows favoritism
towards his/her child over other players.
Stigma - an attribute that serves to discredit a
person in the eyes of others.
• Tribal
– Gender, Race, Religion.
• Personal
– Addictions, Mental Disorders
• Physical
– Weight, Deformities
Scapegoating - blaming an individual or group
unfairly for something when in fact the
blame lies elsewhere or when it is uncertain
where the blame lies.
Examples:
- Blaming all the Muslim people for the attack on
9/11
- Blaming all the Japanese for the attack on Pearl
Harbor
Research on scapegoating shows that
individuals, when frustrated or unhappy,
tend to displace aggression onto groups
that are disliked, are visible, and are
relatively powerless.
