Power Point Key Concepts

Power point presentations are used as a tool to enhance presentations

Keep slides short & sweet – Avoid paragraphs, use bullets

Use images/graphs to keep the slides visually interesting and illustrate points as
appropriate, avoid the temptation to add too many images.

Use references same as in-text, include references slide at conclusion

Avoid the inclination to include too much information in one slide, break-up topics
as needed, don’t overwhelm the audience.

Use them as a tool to prompt yourself, remember your presentation is they “meat”,
not the power point.

Opening Discussions:
Establishing a Multi-Cultural Clinic
You work for the Department of Human Resources Department of
Public Health for the state of Georgia. A new priority for the new
administration is to reduce health disparities in the state. You are
tasked to serve as Director of a new free clinic in a rural county of
South Georgia where there is a high incidence of type II diabetes
(and other chronic diseases). Unemployment in the county is high,
literacy is low and 65% of the population are Spanish speaking.
1) You can hire 3 full time professionals, who would they be, what
characteristics would they possess?
2) How would you advertise to the local, rural, low income
populations to encourage them to visit the clinic?
3) How would you promote a culturally sensitive environment?
Seminar Question 1
Why is the ‘Study-Abroad Practicum’
recommended for the state of Oaxaca?
Should all medical students (doctors,
nurses, public health, etc.) be required to do a
study abroad or multi-cultural experience?
Seminar Question 2
What ‘initial connections’ were used to develop a
study-abroad nursing course?
Seminar Question 3
What were the ‘lessons learning’ from using the
nursing elective program in Oaxaca, Mexico?
Final Question

America is a changing cultural landscape.
What challenges will we face in the next 20
years? How will we as public health
