THE REFORMATION
• 3 Principles of the Reformation
–1. The authority of the Bible as the
only infallible rule of faith and
practice
–2. Justification by faith alone
–3. The universal priesthood of
believers
THE REFORMATION
• Began almost simultaneously in Germany and
Switzerland.
• The reformers were all born, baptized and
educated in the Roman Catholic Church
• The reformation goes back to the 1st principles
• It started with the question: What must a man
do to be saved? How shall a sinner be justified
before God?

• Martin Luther
–The German reformer
–Ordained as a Catholic priest
–Troubled by sale of indulgences
–On Oct. 31st 1517 he nailed his
95 thesis to church door

–The thesis was copied, printed and
spread throughout Germany and
Europe in a few weeks
–Called later to recant, he stood
firmly on the scriptures

• Ulrich Zwingli --Swiss reformation
• Educated in catholic religion
• Ordained a priest
• Studied Greek New Testament
• Began to preach against the abuses
of the church (sale of indulgences)

–Offered a position of power and
money in the church
–He refused and broke with the
Papacy.

–The reformed church of France
–Influenced reformed churches
in Europe and America
–Becomes known as the great
theologian

–A humanist, lawyer and churchman
–Converted and cast his lot with
reformers

– Like most reformers, defended catholic
church, but sought reform
– Doctrines associated with Calvin
• Total depravity
• Unconditional election
• Limited atonement
• Irresistible grace
• Perseverance of saints

– Scotland is his monument
– Catholic Church owned half the wealth
– Clergy were corrupt and incompetent
– Other courageous preachers-Patrick
Hamilton - burned at the stake
– The smoke of Hamilton’s burning infected
all on whom it blew

• John Knox
– An ordained priest, he became a reformer
under preaching of George Wishart
– Wishart arrested by catholic cardinal and
burned at the stakes
– Knox began preaching, striking at the roots
of the Roman Church
– Spent 19 mos. as a prisoner, slave

– The Reformers became political backbone
of the nation
– Mary, Queen of Scots- unsuccessful at ruling
a country that was reformed in her absence
– Scotland was rebuilt by the reformers
– Knox at his death asked that 2 scriptures be
read: John chapter 17 and the 9th Psalm

1500-1700
• ROGER WILLIAMS
– Founder of Rhode Island
– Helped establish Baptist Church
– Preached to the American Indians
– Was banished for preaching against the power
of government over the church
– A century after his death, the U.S. Cons. 1st
amendment read “congress shall make no law..
