BEHCET’S SYNDROME
Natasha Witt 7th hour
WHAT IS BEHCET’S SYNDROME?
Behcet’s syndrome, also known as Behcet’s Disease, is a very rare disorder that causes inflammation in
the blood vessels throughout your body.
red lesion
It is an autoimmune & autoinflammatory disease with an unknown origin.
The manifestations that occur with Behcet’s are predicted to be caused by
vasculitis from damage to the blood vessels around the body.
A Scientific Description / Layers Of Skin It Affects
Cutaneous manifestations occur in 60-90% of patients with
Behcet’s Syndrome. Erythema nodosum for example -- an
inflammation that occurs in the fatty layer of the
subcutaneous tissue that causes red lesions to form
underneath the skin.
Other cutaneous manifestations include acneiform nodules,
pseudofolliculitis, etc.

WHAT IS BEHCET’S SYNDROME CONT..
3FACTS
1. There are fewer than 20,000 cases a year of Behcet’s Syndrome
2. It is NOT contagious
3. Behcet’s Syndrome can reach any area of the body. The most common areas
affected are skin and the mouth -- but the brain could also become inflamed
as well.
SOME SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BEHCET’S SYNDROME
There's no specific signs or a diagnosis of Behcet’s Syndrome. Generally lesions and
manifestations can occur; but other symptoms like arthritis, aneurysms, large vessel
vasculitis, etc. can occur as well.
Oral ulcerations / lesions are generally the first manifestations of Behcet’s that occur
before any other symptoms. These ulcers are very painful, shallow, and deep -- they can
appear yellow or white with a “red halo”. They affect mainly the buccal mucosa, lips, and
tongue.
Genital Lesions / ulcers are more rare in occurrence than oral ulcerations. These lesions
tend to be large and deep. Genital lesions in men can occur on the scrotum and shaft, whilst
lesions affect the vulva, vagina, and cervix for women.
Ocular manifestations / ocular inflammation is one of the main manifestations of
Behcet’s Syndrome. Behcet’s is a few of the autoimmune diseases that can cause anterior
and posterior uveitis (inflammation in the eye). The eye’s uveal tract becomes inflamed and
can cause blurred vision, pain, sensitivity with light, and a mass amount of tears
CAUSE OF BEHCET’S SYNDROME?
There is no known specific cause of Behcet’s Syndrome. Doctors diagnose patients with the variety of symptoms that can
occur and observe if several match up with similar signs of Behcet’s.
IS THERE A CURE?
No specific cures of Behcet’s Syndrome have been discovered yet.
But there are things you can do to minimize the superficial
symptoms and reduce overall pain that comes with the disease -steroids, mouthwash, and eyedrops can provide relief.
WORST CASE SCENARIO
If Behcet’s Syndrome goes untreated symptoms and pain can majorly increase over a time period of a
couple years. The disease is so rare sometimes doctors aren’t able to recognize it and just categorize it as
bad acne -- which means the disease, under assumption, gets untreated more than we think.
